CODY'S POV:
"Are you on your way back?" Charlie asked Eryk, shuffling his phone between his hands as he paced between the living and dining room. "Okay, I forgot to tell you that I'm going to go in a little earlier today so I'll be home around seven tonight."
Charlie normally kept Eryk in the loop about everything. Maybe that was because Eryk's responsibility was to watch over me in Charlie's absence, but I think it stems from their relationship. Charlie is in charge, he's the boss...but their relationship was always based on a level of mutual respect.
I wonder if I'll ever have that with him.
"Yeah, I'll be leaving probably a few minutes after you get here but I wanted to be home early since it's your last night in the house."
I twiddled my thumbs at the kitchen table, patiently waiting for Charlie to finish the call. He called me down here and said we had a few things to discuss, which I'm assuming is about the plan for tomorrow or how the new schedule will work with Eryk not here.
"Okay, see you soon." He hung up, sliding his phone into his back pocket and coming over to where I was sitting.
"You said you want to talk to me?" I rushed, desperate to see what it was actually about.
"Yeah, we should go over your new routine one more time." Taking the seat across from me, he leaned forward on his elbows. "A week ago, I requested to be on daylight permanently, which means I'll be working from seven in the morning until three in the afternoon unless overtime is required."
I nodded, trying to mirror that to my school schedule. "The bus leaves at half-past seven and I'll get home around, probably a quarter-til-three."
"Right, so you need to be responsible and get yourself out of bed in the morning. Do not, do not miss the bus." He said sternly. "You know how to set your alarm right?"
"You mean Eryk's? Yes, I do. I'll just move it to my end stand since he won't need it."
"Okay good, and you'll be home an hour and a half before I get home." He paused, allowing me to digest that information and recognize what he was trying to convey. "When you get off the bus, I want you inside with the doors locked. Don't answer the door, don't mess around outside, just come home and get started on your homework. If you finish before I arrive or if you have none, then you're free to do whatever you want around the house."
"So, like normal." I smiled, trying to pretend that that's what Eryk and I did when we took the summer classes.
"The other rule is you're not to have anyone over."
"Yes sir." I was slightly bummed, but I didn't have too many friends with the same bus schedule who lives within walking distance, so he has nothing to worry about there.
I could tell he was taking a minute to try to think of anything else that may come up as a concern with me being left alone. I've never been completely alone in the house before; mom or Eryk was always there to get me off the bus and for dinner, and then most evenings were spent with Eryk inside our bedroom. This was going to feel so foreign to me.
"If you're hungry, make a snack until I get home and make dinner. On most days I'll call you as soon as I do to check in."
I nodded, again. "There's always snacks here so I'll be okay."
He smiled. "Maybe, if you show me that you can follow these rules and adapt into the schedule, I'll start allowing your friends to come over when I'm not here. Especially once we get you on the baseball team." He elbowed me, shooting me a smirk.
