CODY'S POV:
I grabbed the last bag and followed them both out of the store, doing my best to avert the surprised stares from everyone in the way. Charlie was fuming. I don't think Eryk should be punished for this, especially since he didn't even start it. There was no way Charlie could find him at fault for that.
"Cody sit in the back please." Charlie said to me.
I crawled in the back, trying to keep myself from being smushed from the boxes of groceries that they both piled back here.
"Are you hurt?" Charlie asked me as he rested his elbows on the top of the seat.
"No, no I'm fine. He just grabbed me."
Eryk got in and strapped his seatbelt, he knew he was in trouble but he didn't look angry he looked embarrassed.
"Are you ok?" Charlie asked him, you could tell that wasn't his main concern since he could clearly see Eryk got the best of that guy.
"Yes, I'm fine."
Charlie pushed the seat back and got in, he placed his hands on the steering wheel and gripped it tightly.
"I'm going to ask this once and if I hear anything but a clear and honest answer," he turned his attention to Eryk. "your next few days are going to be painful. Is that clear?"
"Yes sir." Eryk said with a sigh.
"What happened? And think about what you're going to say before you say it."
Eryk took a deep breath and glanced back at me as if I could help. He tried to calm himself so he didn't say someone stupid and risk pissing Charlie off even more.
"I was checking out, I told Cody to go start boxing the groceries and I...." he stopped and considered whether or not he should mention how distracted he was by Natalie.
"I'm listening." Charlie said impatiently.
"I saw Matt grab Cody by the chest and pinch his face so I went over, broke his grip and pushed him away. But then he hit me hard in the stomach and I hit him back."
Charlie leaned back against the seat and crossed his arms.
"Cody is that true?"
"Yes sir. He was bullying me." I said clearly in Eryk's defense.
Charlie started the truck and began driving us home. It's not going to take us long to get back, but thankfully for Eryk Charlie has to go back to work for a few hours.
"Eryk, I know you felt like you did what you had to do in that situation and that you had to defend yourself but there are appropriate ways of handling certain things. Not to mention the scene you pulled in the store. You could have been arrested for..."
"Charlie what was I supposed to do? He hit me and he touched Cody!" Eryk yelled.
"Don't raise your voice to me." Charlie warned. "I understand all of these things, but you need to understand that you should have handled...."
"Charlie that's not fair!"
"Do we have to have a conversation about how you keep interrupting me?" He asked coldly. "Or about how you keep raising your voice!" He yelled this time and I jumped. "Do we?"
"No sir." Eryk leaned back against the seat, accepting his defeat
The rest of the car ride home was silent, there was a spread of awkwardness as Charlie continued driving and Eryk leaned his head against the window. By the time we arrived at the house, everyone seemed to be in their own world as if we were oblivious to each other.
