Maddie

"Hi, I'm Doctor Irwin," a man walked in.

"I'm Maddie, this is my brother Zach," I introduced us.

"So, Zach, you hurt your wrist? What happened?" Dr. Irwin questioned, making Zach laugh. This was going to be a disaster.

"Man, my brother and I were fighting and he's just a dick," Zach laughed. "I got a couple of punches in, but he totally fucked up my wrist," I sighed and shook my head, running a hand through my hair.

"I am so sorry, he's drunk," I apologized to Dr. Irwin.

"Not a problem," he lightly smiled. "Let's get an IV started," he said and brought over the stuff. Luckily, Zach was all for it, chatting away.

"You know how it is, getting totally fucked up," Zach laughed, "this is going to be shit tomorrow,"

"You are gonna have it rough tomorrow," Dr. Irwin chuckled after he got the IV in. "Alright Zach, I'm gonna check out your wrist," he said and Zach nodded. Ashton looked at it, then said he was going to order an x-ray.

"How did you two get here?" he asked.

"We walked," I shrugged.

"I want to keep him overnight, he's pretty drunk and I want him to stay on an IV," he explained and I nodded.

"Am I allowed to stay?" I asked and he nodded. He left while I stayed until a nurse came to take Zach back for x rays. As I waited, the door opened back up and Ashton walked in with a guy.
"Maddie, this is Dr. Hemmings," he introduced me.

"It's nice to meet you," Dr. Hemmings smiled.

"You too," I lightly smiled back and turned off my phone.

"I just want to talk about your brothers really quickly," Dr. Hemmings sat down on the visiting chair next to me as Ashton went over to the computer and started to type.

"What about them?"

"Your brother Zach said that he and your other brother got into a fight, and now his wrist is broken," he explained and I nodded. "Does this happen often?" I knew exactly what was happening, they were thinking abuse.

"I mean they argue, but tonight they just drank a little bit too much and got drunk, so it was bad," I explained. "They are responsible, it's not what you're thinking,"

"Do you live with anyone else?"

"Just them,"

"Do you feel safe at home?" Dr. Hemmings asked.

"Yes, of course," I quickly nodded. "They would never hurt me, they're still in their twenties so they drink, but it's very rarely irresponsible," I reassured him and he nodded.

"We just wanted to make sure, when we see a weird situation with a minor it is protocol that we asked," Dr. Hemmings explained.

My eyebrows furrowed, "Weird situation?"

He chuckled, "It's not everyday a kid brings their older brother in who is drunk and has a broken bone," he explained.

"Oh," I lightly chuckled. It was hard to think no one else had to deal with that, it's been my life for so long that it just seems normal.

"If you ever need to talk, my door is always open," Dr. Hemmings handed me a card and I nodded, taking it with a smile.

"Thank you, Dr. Hemmings," I thanked him.

"You can call me Luke," he said and I nodded. He left, only leaving me and Dr. Irwin in the room.

"Your brother broke his wrist and has a concussion, we're getting him set up into an overnight room if you'd like to come," he told me and I nodded. I followed him out of the room and to the overnight rooms, making small talk. "How old are you?"

"Fourteen," I answered.

"Freshmen?" he questioned and I nodded. "Do you like high school?"

"I enjoy math and science, not the rest of it," I chuckled.

"Not a fan of English or history?"

"No, it's boring,"

"I never liked them either," he admitted.

"I just like other things, those bore me," I explained and he nodded.

"How old is your other brother?" he asked, knowing Zach was 26.

"Nate is 28," I said, then smiled, "hey that rhymes," I noticed and he laughed. We went into the room and I sat down in the chair as Ashton began to get Zach in a cast, though he was completely passed out.

"We gave him stuff to fall asleep," he explained and I nodded. The cast was finally on and Dr. Irwin gave him one last check. "Alright, you should be set for the evening, is there anything else you need?"

"I'm alright, but thank you, Dr. Irwin," I smiled.

"You can call me Ashton," he said and I nodded. "I'll see you in the morning, have a good night,"

"You too," I said and he left. I pulled out my laptop and began top work on my essay, knowing I wasn't going to sleep.
