"Did everyone turn in their essay last night?" Liv asked the class.
They all nodded and she said, "I'm going to check in a minute. If I see one late submission we aren't going to have a free day."
They looked confident. She went to her computer and she looked through the submission tab.
She looked up at them and the classroom got tensely quiet.
She then said, "I guess you can have a free day..."
They cheered and she chuckled. I loved when she bantered with them. It felt like they were her friends as well as her students and I understood why they liked her so much.
Tiffany raised her hand and said, "Ms. Thompson you're still in first place for the prettiest teacher poll."
She looked amused, "I didn't think the students still did that. You know we did that back when I went here."
Then Caden, her brother, said, "Did y'all even have pretty teachers back then?"
I knew my mother was going to come up in this conversation and it didn't help that she was going to bring me lunch today.
Liv nodded and sat on her desk, "We had one teacher who won the poll ten years in a row."
I was a little shocked by that. My mother got the award for ten years straight. She only worked here for ten years.
Then a kid asked, "Why did she lose?"
"Because she quit." Liv explained.
They looked even more amazed and Caden said, "That's crazy...was she pretty or hot?"
I cringed a bit and Liv giggled because she saw me.
Tiffany then said, "Did you have her too Miss Talia. Was she not pretty?"
I did a long sigh, "She's pretty it's just...she's my mother."
They gasped collectively and Caden said, "Well you are in second place for prettiest teacher."
But I'm not even a teacher yet.
"Talia looks a lot like her mother so it's understandable. I'm sure she'll surpass me before the year is up...that is unless your mother resumes her position." Liv said jokingly.
I rolled my eyes and she giggled.
"Is she still pretty? Wait...if she was your teacher Ms. T she has to be like super old now." A kid pointed out.
I nodded and said, "She's in her 50s."
Tiffany then said, "Some people age well."
The door opened and my mother peeked her head in.
She saw me and said, "I brought your lunch sweetie."
They couldn't see her face and I could see them trying to see her.
I stood up and pushed her out of the classroom.
"What's wrong?" She asked.
I then said, "You didn't tell me you won the prettiest teacher poll ten years in a row."
She chuckled, "Well half of my votes each year were from Tyler."
I untied her apron and I said, "Well they're talking about you right now so let's get you presentable and show them what twenty years of being unproblematic does for the wrinkles."
She chuckled softly, "Ok."
I took off her hat and fixed her hair.
"Did Mama T make you wear this dress? Why are you so dressed up?"
