Liv and I finished grading so we were preparing everything for the picnic.

Liv and Dani were upstairs picking out the perfect blanket. I was waiting for my Mother and Grandmother to finish making our food.

As I stood there I said, "Grandma did you need to say that to her?"

Mama D looked up from her kettle. "What did she say?"

"She told Liv to watch who she associates with." I explained.

Mama T glanced between us and then she softly said, "Has Liv ever mentioned any of her friends to you."

My eyes widened, "Mom you're siding with her. Even if she's right you have to admit that's harsh for a first meeting. Grandma didn't even say Hi."

Mama D chuckled, "Nelly regardless of your knowledge about the woman you know it is polite to be courteous."

Grandma Nelly sighed, "You are correct Danielle. I should've said hello."

I put my chin on her shoulder, "You're not going to apologize are you?"

She chuckled. "Of course I'm not going to apologize. I have no remorse for anything I say."

I moved my chin, "So...what? You've never apologized to anyone."

She continued to slice the fruit, "I've apologized to many sweetheart. None of them live long enough to tell about it."

Mama T then said, "Mother. I'm not here for your jokes this morning."

I raised my eyebrows, "That many of your friends have passed away Grandma?"

She chuckled, "No, just a lot of enemies dear. Tragic deaths, all of them."

She must make a lot of enemies.

"Is that what you mean then. Liv is friends with one of your enemies?" I asked.

She stopped slicing the fruit, "No. She's friends with one of your enemies."

We made eye contact and I was quiet.

My thoughts were interrupted with fast footsteps coming down the stairs.

Then Dani and Liv emerged.

"We have the perfect blanket, a pillow, lots of stories, and my noise cancelling headphones." Dani said excitedly.

I smiled "Great. The food is almost ready."

As Liv and Dani stood there I nudged my grandmother. She put her knife down with a short sigh.

Then she turned to Liv with a soft smile. "Hello Olivia. I'm Grandma Nelly. Tyler's Mother."

Liv did a soft nod and gave a nervous smile "It is nice to meet you Nelly-"

"Grandma Nelly" My grandmother corrected.

"G-grandma Nelly." Liv said nervously.

Mama D came over and said, "Alright. Here's the drinks. Don't worry, they won't spill."

Mama T put the sandwiches in our basket and then Nelly packaged our fruit.

"Wow. Grandma Nelly you cut the fruit into perfect cubes." Dani said.

Grandma put the fruit in the basket.

"I cut a lot of things." Was all she said as she handed the basket to me.

We began to walk off and Grandma said, "Olivia."

We all turned back to the counter.

My Grandmother had a smug look, "Don't be upset. It's a sign of good luck."
