Since a while I have noticed Hero grow more and more uneasy. With every day that dragon existed I noticed that he got more and more quiet, hiding longer and longer in the basement. He grew distant, his eyes only focused on his task. He never even reacted on any of us calling him up for any sort of food, whether it was dinner or lunch. Red had no idea what to do anymore, so he turned to me, the dad of the group.
So eventually, after a few days, while Jura, Xander and Jubilea brought Pietro back home, I finally went downstairs Hero hadn't come up in a few days by now, so I was starting to get worried.
When I entered the basement, I immediately noticed the smell of blood having gotten much heavier by now. I frowned worriedly and went down the stairs after locking the door behind me. With a quick look around the corner I immediately knew what was up.
He glanced over when he heard my steps on the stairs, looking pretty tired. His eyes had gone dull with pain, his right arm was a pincushion by now since he stabbed all the needles he'd need and more in there, and he was very pale. I noticed one of the puppets nearby, a small cat, which he was cuddling a bit.
A deep sigh escaped me and I went towards him, kneeling down besides his body. He watched, putting on a small, sad smile. I worriedly frowned and pulled him close. Hero snuggled up to me softly, sighing.
We stayed quiet for a long time before he finally hid a bit more in my chest. "How do you feel, Hero?", I asked softly. "I'm fine...", he muttered quietly, but I shook my head. "You, buddy, are not fine.", I said calmly and rubbed over his head. "You definitely need to lay off some of that stress. Maybe bake something or whatever.", I added. He sighed weakly and agreed. "I guess so...", he mumbled quietly. I nodded and and kept him really close. After a while I noticed him having gone oddly silent, and felt something wet on my shirt. So I immediately looked to see what was going on, but soon realized that he just cried himself to sleep.
With a soft sigh I got up with him in my arms, his legs wrapped around my hips. In a very careful fashion I brought him to Red, who was currently in their room, and set him down on the bed. Reddie looked over, worried. "What happened?", he asked quietly, as to not disturb his fiancé's rest. I told him what happened, getting some tweezers, a small bowl and the medkit. Then I sat down next to Hero and started plucking out the needles, very carefully. Those were a lot, lot longer than I expected tho, making me wonder why they never exited on the other side of his arm.
Red watched worriedly and helped as I struggled with 3 or 4 needles, they wouldn't budge at all. "We might need to head to a hospital or something for that.", I mumbled quietly. "I can't get them out, they probably are stuck in his bones or something..."
"Why would he do that tho? What is he doing in the basement?"
I hesitated a bit, knowing I promised Hero to never tell him what he was really doing down there. But by now, it was better than letting Reddie find out by himself, he might get even more traumatized, or possibly even terrified of Hero.
Now I was in a pickle. Do I let him find it out by himself, but ensure that he believes me with that, or do I tell him now and prevent any trauma, but possibly make him check by himself...?
Either way, there are two definite solutions: He's gonna be either terrified of Hero, or he'll be traumatized.
And neither of those options sound appealing right now...
I can't just lie to Red, he'll know just like back when the prophecy was discovered... Which still is active somehow, there was no new one. And with the current trouble... I'm terrified to see how that will end.
But I can't betray Hero now either, especially after the trusts me so much and let me be by his side when he didn't let anyone get close to me. He listens to me as if I was his father, but as a pretty much adoptive dad, I have certain responsibilities, that also includes protecting everyone...
While I was struggling with my thoughts, Hero woke up without my knowledge. So my next move was my biggest mistake I made yet when it comes to him, because before I realized it, I blurted out: "He's making dolls out of corpses!"
The room went silent after that. Red stared at me, and now I could also feel Hero's eyes on my skin. I went pale when I understood the mistake I made and looked at him, my breathing pausing.
"Excuse me...?", Red whispered, shocked. "I pray that my ears have deceived me."
I gulped. I fucked up, now Hero would definitely not trust me anymore.
The unknown, third option had taken place with this.
Now I have destroyed a relationship, and lost the trust of one person that needed someone to trust the most.
I let out a shaky breath and closed my eyes, bracing myself. "He... Killed quite a few people, and while we were upstairs, he went to the basement and tried to let out steam by gutting the people and stuffing their skin with cotton. He has a doll of us all, you included."
I left out the part with the suit, praying for the best.
Next thing I heard was Red storming out of the room and Hero still just staring at me. A bit hopeful I opened my eyes and looked at him, only to immediately be greeted with a fist to the face.
"I knew I couldn't trust you, Jaylord."
With that, he teleported away, not returning.
I let out a shaky breath and hid my face in my hands, not caring about my bleeding nose.
I should've kept my mouth closed.
