Spencer James

"We've got a grade three placenta abruption!" the EMT announced as Olivia was rushed into the hospital. Spencer rushed right alongside Olivia, holding on to the railing of the gurney she laid on.

"What the hell does that mean?" Spencer questioned as he glanced at the EMT. He watched as other trained medical professionals rushed to provide aid for Olivia.

"We need to get her in a room now!" the EMT ordered. "Her blood pressure is dropping! We've got to get her in now to deter her body from going into shock" he yelled as the crew rushed Olivia into a nearby room.

"I need to know what's going on!" Spencer said as he watched the doctors scramble around the room.

"Sir you cannot be in this room right now" a doctor stood in front of the door. "Someone will be with you shortly to notify you on what's going on" the doctor informed him and began to close the door.

"I need to know what the fuck is going on right now!" Spencer yelled through gritted teeth. "My wife and son are in that room!" he started to charge at the doctor.

"SECURITY AT ROOM 103!" the receptionist yelled as she stood up from her seat. The security hurried toward Spencer and the doctor, getting in between the two.

"I'm good, I'm good!" Spencer repeated as he held his hands up, backing away from the room. "Olivia! I love you baby!" he got choked up on his words as the security escorted him to the waiting area.

Spencer sent out a mass text to their immediate family and loved ones, informing everyone on what's going on. He stood on his feet, pacing back and forth as he waited on an update regarding Olivia and their son's health status.

"We gon' be good...God got us" he repeated to himself as his hands began to shake vigorously. A million thoughts began to run into Spencer's head. He didn't understand what happened with Olivia and their baby, both of them treated their pregnancy with delicacy. He then began to wonder if this situation could've been a result of the stress Olivia endured in the beginning of the pregnancy.

"Fuck man!" he kicked the chair in frustration, causing the receptionist to glance at him. Spencer's phone suddenly rang, interrupting him from his thoughts.

Ten minutes later, Laura and Jordan arrived at the hospital. The two of them approached the desk receptionist, demanding for answers regarding Olivia and the baby's health.

"Somebody needs to start talking!" Laura raised her voice. "Right now!" she demanded, slamming her hand on the desk.

"Mrs. Baker, Jordan!" Spencer stood up, watching as the two approached him. The three of them hugged for a brief moment before pulling out of the embrace.

"What happened to Olivia and the baby, Spencer? Are they going to be okay? What's going on?" Mrs. Baker questioned as tears streamed down her face.

"I...I came home from my meeting and found Liv on the bathroom floor. There...there was blood in between her legs, she had vaginal bleeding" Spencer explained. "I'm still waiting on-"

"Family of Olivia Baker-James" one of the doctor's came out, causing the three of them to glance at the doctor. "I'm Doctor Evans" he introduced himself.

"I'm Olivia's husband, Spencer James. I apologize for my behavior earlier" Spencer said and the doctor nodded. "Next to me I have Olivia's mother, Laura Baker, and her brother, Jordan" he continued.

"I hate we had to meet this way but lovely to meet you" the doctor began. "I know you all want to know what's going on right now-"

"Spencer should've been given answers before the two of us got here" Jordan interrupted and Laura agreed.

"I apologize for the delay...but the severity of Olivia's condition required immediate medical attention. I am here now to explain to you what's going on" the doctor said. "Olivia experienced what is known as a 'placenta abruption'. It's when the placenta pulls away from the uterus and causes blood vessels to bleed" the doctor explained.

"A placenta abruption? Isn't that more common in older women?" Laura mentioned and Spencer glanced at her.

"It is mainly common in older woman but that doesn't mean it can't happen with other pregnancies. A lot of women experience placenta abruption and don't know until after the baby is born. There are different grade levels of this condition and each pregnancy is different" the doctor answered.

"What are the causes?" Spencer inquired.

"High blood pressure, smoking cigarettes, physical assault, an infection in the uterus, the list goes on. But in most cases, the cause is unknown" the doctor said and the three of them nodded. "In Olivia's case, she was classified as a 'grade three' placenta abruption. Meaning she's experienced severe bleeding and a decrease in blood pressure, which could cause the baby to not receive the proper nutrients and oxygen to survive. Which ultimately results to damage of the brain and other vital organs....and can be deadly for the mother" the doctor explained.

"So what does this all mean?" Spencer questioned as his heart pounded rapidly. "Will my wife and son be okay?"

"It means that we're going to have to perform an emergency cesarean to save the lives of both mom and baby" the doctor explained and Spencer's stomach churned. "We don't want to result in a stillbirth nor would we want to result in maternal loss due to the loss of blood" he continued.

"How long is the surgery?" Jordan questioned.

"Thirty to seventy five minutes" the doctor answered. "We're getting Olivia on anesthesia and she'll be going into surgery any minute now" he conceded.

"Thank you-"

"WE HAVE A CODE BLUE IN ROOM 103!" a nurse yelled out and the doctor's eyes widened. The doctor then rushed into the room Olivia was in, leaving the three of them in shock.

"Spencer..." Laura glanced at him. "Tell me that's not Olivia's room" she choked up on her words as she glanced at the closed door.

"Mom-"

"Tell ME that's not Olivia's room!" Laura repeated and Spencer's eyes were filled with tears. "Spencer! Tell me that's not my daughter's room!" she shrieked, getting into his face.

"Mom-"

"That's my daughter in there!" Laura cried as she ran toward the door of the room Olivia was in there. Jordan and Spencer followed closely behind, holding her back from trying to get in the door. "Let me fucking go!" she yelled, attempting to break free from their grasp.

"Mrs. B! You've got to calm-"

"You did this to her!" she wiped her tears from her face.

"What?!" Spencer's eyes widened.

"How else could she have ended up on the floor, hm?!" she questioned and Spencer couldn't believe she'd accuse him of such behavior.

"Mrs. B-"

"Walk away, Spence" Jordan cut him off. "Please just...walk away" he begged. Jordan mouthed 'I'm sorry' to Spencer as he walked back toward the waiting area.

"Spencer!" a familiar voice called out.

He then ran to his Pops, embracing him in a much needed hug. Spencer released the emotions he'd been trying to contain.

"I'm here son..." Mr. A's eyes filled with tears as he held onto Spencer as tight as he could. "Let it all out..." he continued.
