Uria IV
A Pelican passes through a cloud layer and into a thunderstorm. Soon the drop ship descended from the storm clouds, stopping just above some rubble.
Pilot: Last stop, Sargent.
Sargent: Understood, Zulu. Let's get our boots on the ground, Marines.
The bay door opened, and the team of seven were immediately hit with the smell of burnt... everything, and the sound of gunfire. The marines then stepped off the Pelican. Looking at a war torn battleground. The sounds of the gunfire were distant but was there.
Ash: Is it weird to say that I'm already use to this smell?
Medic: Join the club.
Ash: Hey Sarge, remind me why we're out here? You didn't exactly give me a rundown of the mission when you picked me up.
Sargent: We need to head to a research centre to recover some data the UNSC don't want in Covenant hands. We're heading to a predetermined meeting point to rendezvous with a Spartan who's going to make sure we get there.
Ash: Roger that Sarge. Let's not keep the big guy waiting then.
Recon: Hostiles approaching. Small group of Alligators and Baby Kongs.
Ash: So Elites and Brutes. Wonderful.... Any heavy weapons, Recon?
Recon: Seeing a couple of Bruteshots and a Plasma launcher. The rest have Plasma Rifles.
Ash: Well thankfully, I brought grenades and remembered to pack this.
He grabbed the Sniper rifle that he strapped onto his back before they got on the Pelican.
Sargent: Prepared... Good to see some of the new blood has common sense.
Recon: They've spotted us. We need to sta-
He didn't get the chance to finish as an Energy Sword impaled his back, an Elite phasing in and out of view.
Sargent: Open fire!
Ash tried to take aim at the elite but it faded away before he could fire. He then noticed how the ground had been shifting, and had got an idea. He grabbed a fistful of dirt, and threw it toward a shimmer. The dirt hit something, letting him see cloaked Elite clearly.
Ash: Gotcha!
He then swung the sniper rifle like a baseball bat, hitting the elite's head and disabling the camo before firing a sniper round right into its face. The rest of the Covenant squad reached their position. Bullets, plasma, and explosives were launched across the ruined buildings. The team managed to kill the squad, but one of the other marines took a rouge plasma bolt to the face, instantly killing him. Ash walked over to the dead marine's body. He pulled off his dog tags and looked down before stashing them in a pocket. He looked over the gear and took the ammunition the soldier had on him.
Ash: Sorry mate. I'll make sure these get home safely.
He muttered to himself as he took out a journal, wrapped by a ribbon. Ash's mother told him about these kinds of journals; the ones that have letters written by marines and sent to their families. This one had a picture of the marine, along with a young girl who looked to be about five or six years old.
Sargent: It never gets easier... We just have to make sure they didn't die for nothing.
The young Marine held a downcast expression, but nodded.
Ash: Alright. Let's get the data.
The group pushed forward, ending up in a half-collapsed shopping centre. There were piles of Covenant bodies, and a lot more scattered around.
