This chapter is still in need of revision. But my mind is too tired. I just don't want to keep this work in drafts, so I'm publishing it, I'm counting on your understanding. Perhaps I should have worked on it better.

1. Unfamiliar stranger

Laurent tossed and turned in bed for a long time, the pain spreading throughout his body in heavy waves. His consciousness slowly returned, bringing with it even more pain throughout his body. Closing his eyes tightly, Laurent tried to open his eyes again, hoping that the pain would go away a little. But even the muffled light emanating from the wall lamp crashed into his eyes with burning pain, as soon as they opened them a little. Consciousness was confused, and Laurent did not understand anything at all except that he felt like a continuous lump of pain. Laurent wanted to take a deep breath but almost died from the burning sensation in his chest. It hurt all at once. Laurent did not even notice the tears flowing from his eyes as he tried to put up with the pain with an effort of will, keeping his eyes open.

- Hey, how are you? Laurent winced. His body hurt so much that he did not notice the presence of the girl next to his bed. - Do you remember what happened to you? The girl looked at the man in awe. Laurent listened to himself, trying to break into his consciousness through the pain, but his feeble efforts yielded nothing. Everything was muddy, and apart from the name, he could not get anything else out of himself. - You can speak? - Laurent focused on the girl's worried look and croaked weakly.

- My name is Laurent.- His voice was like the cawing of crows, with a strong cough and wheezing coming from his lungs. - I don't understand anything. - Laurent made a feeble attempt to sit up, but his hands trembled slightly as he raised himself even a little. The girl forced Laurent to lie back down, even though he didn't have the strength for even a little resistance.

- I'm Katie. You are in the hospital. You were found two days ago on the side of the road. There was a big car accident, many people were injured. The bridge collapsed, and apparently, you were thrown out of the car, and you ended up under the rubble of the bridge. Do you remember this accident?

-No,- Laurent hissed in confusion, his body slowly covered with fear. Because he didn't remember anything. Even his last name. He didn't know where he was or what he was doing. All that was in his mind was his name, and then emptiness. I don't remember anything except my name.

- Good. I will tell the doctor that you are awake, he will examine you, and we will decide how to help you. But now you need to sleep - Laurent saw how Katie pressed some button on the device next to his bed, and then his consciousness fell into sleep.

When Laurent woke up again, instead of Katie, he saw a doctor. He was examined for a long time and tediously, his limbs were checked for reactions, how active his brain was, and various tests and procedures. His physical body was not so badly injured, only severe bruising of the ribs and severely damaged ligaments and muscles in the knee, but this injury was received before the accident.

- So, Laurent, you don't remember anything except your name, right? - Laurent just nodded gloomily, these two days spent in the hospital conscious, trying to remember at least something, but it turned out to be useless. - You are practically healthy, we can discharge you. Then a rehabilitation center and a psychiatrist will take care of you. - Laurent didn't get the expression rehab center. It sounded scary.

- Can I ... Not live in this center?

- Then where will you live? You have nothing, no money, no housing, you have one working leg and all you know about yourself is your name. If you want to live somewhere else, you need a trustee.

- I can - Laurent and the doctor looked at the girl in surprise - What? I am a volunteer at the rehabilitation center, and I can be Laurent's trustee, I have experience in this.
