At the restaurant, Levi told Renna to wait in the car after he parked. She watched him run around the front of the car to her door. As he opened the door for her, she wore a giant grin.
She chuckled. "Thanks."
"Thank-God you're one of the girls that like that," he said, letting the door slam shut and locking the car. "I once did that for a girl and she told me she was capable on her own and to never do it again. It killed the mood so much, we ended the date early and never had other one."
"That's terrible," Renna said, holding Levi's hand as they walked to the entrance. "It doesn't hurt to just say thank-you and accept the kind gesture."
"Right! It's not like I was saying she was too weak to open the door by herself and she needed a strong man to do it for her. I was just being nice."
"I see it as a sign of respect. You wouldn't do it for someone you hate."
He pulled the glass door open and allowed her to walk through first. Another sign of respect.
Renna loved his kind heart. It had been what attracted her to him from the beginning. While other guys at the club were trying to buy her drinks and rub up against her, Levi started by complementing her bold eye make-up, mentioning it was his favourite colour—sunset orange.
Small talk started from there and grew deeper. When he discovered she was out at the clubs with her friends because it was her birthday, he offered to buy her a drink, reassuring her there were no strings attached to it. Of course, she kept her eyes on him and her drink the entire time, but despite the short distance between them over the small circle table they were sat at, he never touched her or did anything to make her uncomfortable.
When her friends found her an hour later and told her they were going to leave, he gave her his number and offered a warm smile with a goodbye that left her wanting more.
The next day, she texted, asking if he had changed his mind now that he's sober or if he was interested in meeting up again. He replied immediately with, 'Throw away the chance to see a beautiful girl again? No way. I'd love too.'
They spent the past month chatting and hanging out, which had been fun for both of them, but Renna was excited for the first proper date with Levi at a fancy restaurant.
Inside, the entire place was made up with deep reds, dark wood and golds. Warm fairy lights wrapped around the thick beams on the ceiling. A candle on every table in glass cylinders. The dark atmosphere with the warm lighting gave it a cozy feel; like a fire in a cabin.
Renna felt out of place. She thought the room was too elegant for her to be standing in. If she had been the one to choose the restaurant for the date, she wouldn't have looked at this one, but she was giddy with excitement to be here.
She glanced around at the large area with a large grin, while Levi led her towards the reception stand.
"Table for Whittaker," he said to the woman at the stand, reminding Renna of his last name.
The young woman tapped on a computer screen several times, eyes flicking back and forth, before she looked up and said, "No, sorry. I can't see that name anywhere."
"What do you mean?" Levi said, letting Renna's hand go. "I made a reservation a week ago. Can you check again?"
She looked at the screen again. "No," she said, still scanning for a name. "No, there's no Whittaker here." She looked up, looking a little scared. "We've had a few mix ups this week. We believe it's a glitch in our system. We've had someone fix it, but it doesn't fix the mix ups already made. I'm sorry."
"Is there nothing you can do about it?"
"Afraid not. We're all booked out tonight."
Levi looked like he might explode at the girl, so Renna lightly grabbed his arm to get his attention. "We can go somewhere else."
"No," he said, his face a little red. "I promised you a date at this restaurant."
"No," she said, trying to guide him out of the restaurant, but not getting very far. "You promised me a date at a restaurant. I don't care where."
"This is ridiculous!" he shouted back at the girl as Renna dragged him out, hiding her face from the staring diners. "Can't even keep a reservation! Unbelievable!"
She kept her voice low as she she spoke to him over her shoulder. "Levi. It's alright. Let's go somewhere else."
"If they can't hold reservations, why bother even taking them!"
She stopped him outside as the glass doors closed slow on their own. "It's not her fault. Yelling won't help. It's a glitch. Other people probably had the same problem."
"I don't care about the other people," he shouted at her. "I booked a reservation because I wanted to give you an amazing night to show you how much I care about you."
Stepping closer, she placed her palm against his cheek. "I don't need a fancy restaurant. I just want to be with you."
He smiled and relaxed. With a sigh, he said, "Alright. Let's find somewhere else to go." His arm slung over her shoulders as they walked back to his car, and began discussing their options for dinner.
