( heartbreak weather ── niall horan )
❛ it can be so lonely in this city
but it feels different when you're with me ❜the song finally came to an end. jeremiah, cam and some girls from the country club were singing summer lovin', by jeremiah's request, of course. he wanted to rope belly into joining them but she just cringed and left the room, probably to find her friend taylor.
he wanted to get sadie to join him too but he knew better. she wasn't much of a dancer or a singer and if he approached her with the microphone he was afraid she'd never speak to him again.
"beer pong table is free!" the fisher boy noted, motioning for conrad and sadie to follow. while everyone was singing, the pair stood leaning against the wall watching in amusement. they shared a look, and then followed jeremiah who was already outside making cam put the beer into the colourful cups.
once they joined them outside conrad helped cameron while jeremiah and sadie stood on opposite sides of the table watching them. "you're going down!" jeremiah slurred, taking another sip from the cup he was holding. sadie just raised an eyebrow.
conrad put the final cup down and it was time to play. without discussing it they silently agreed that cam and jere would be one pair while the other would be sadie and conrad. "ladies friest," the older fisher boy handed the girl the ping pong ball.
she focused or at least tried to. she drank a little and was slightly buzzed. she threw the ball at the cups but it bounced off of the cup at the end. jeremiah faked cried, mocking the girl while cam just chuckled. conrad threw a ball but missed too.
"you guys suck," jere voiced, throwing a ball and making it into the cup. the two boys cheered while sadie drank the content of the cup and put it on the side. cam threw a ball, but unlike jeremiah, he didn't make it. the boy smiled awkwardly causing jere to give him a reassuring, confident smile.
conrad threw his ball and surprisingly made it. jeremiah took the cup and drank the beer. the girl's vision became a little blurry, hoping she'd make it she threw the ball. it bounced off of one cup and fell into another one. the pair cheered, high-fiving each other while jeremiah downed another cup because cam didn't drink.
the ping pong balls were back in sadie and conrad's hands. she went first but didn't make it, then conrad went, and did make it. cam did his turn and made it while jere drank. the drinks were definitely getting to jeremiah because by his next turn his words were slurred much more than before.
they continued playing. it seemed like their luck ran out because by their seventh round conrad and sadie only scored one more cup while jere and cam scored three. sadie prepared to shoot, "you're not gonna make it." jeremiah sang and she, in fact, did not make it. conrad shoot too and also missed. jeremiah imitated a buzzer, "really? not even close."
"wait," conrad spoke up, his next words directed at the boy, "cam, have you started the waltz lessons yet? ms covington's a real sadist." cam took a sip of his non-alcoholic drink, "who you talking about?" the three shared a look and he tried to explain, "the-the dance teacher. for the ball."
the boy smiled awkwardly, "oh. yeah. belly hasn't really asked me yet." sadie smiled in his direction, "oh, i'm sure she will." jeremiah agreed, putting an arm around his shoulder, "yeah seriously. trust me." he added. cam smiled at the reassurance.
he threw the ball but missed. "all right, that was close. ready?" jeremiah prepared to throw, "all right, ready?" he concentrated deeply but was interrupted by belly exiting, "hey!"
"hi," he gasped moving to stand in front of cam, "hi. where have you been?" belly smiled at her friend but a cup in cam's hand got her attention, "um, i-i thought you didn't drink." the boy looked down at his cup, his eyes widening, "oh, it's water. it's water. jeremiah's been drinking for me." he patted the fisher boy on the shoulder.
"mm-hmm," jeremiah confirmed, putting an arm around cam's shoulder again, "i love this kid so much. so fun." belly wore a serious look on her face, something had happened. sadie's suspicions were confirmed when belly asked the boy to leave and they did.
conrad watched them leave, his expression now serious too, "excuse me." he walked away from the table and returned to the house. the pair watched him leave, both probably too drunk to care and ask was everything okay. "one v. one," he voiced.
the girl pulled a pack of cigarettes out of her pocket, "oh its so on fisher." he smiled, then threw the ball and made it, "you're going down crawford."
and the pair continued playing until they both drank too many cups to count and things were just too blurry to recall.
