the morning after belly's birthday was really brutal.
sadie was in her bed, looking at the ceiling. a look of regret and question in her eyes, thinking of the events she truly wished she'd forget . . . or maybe not?
the pair finished their beer pong game, and jeremiah won to nobody's surprise. they were both heavily intoxicated, sitting on the beach near nicole's house. jere wasn't sure how they got there, he couldn't remember, they were supposed to find piper.
the sound of waves crashing in the background of sadie's laugh. she was laughing over something he had said, his slurred drunken words were funny to her. jeremiah joined in on the laughing, not because something was funny but because her laugh was contagious.
the moon looked beautiful that night, it shined so brightly like the sun. aside from the waves they could hear the music from the party playing in the distance.
their laughter slowly died down. not realising it, their faces were closer now than before. how did that happen?
inches separated them and they could feel each other's breaths. their eyes slowly met, and at that moment they were the only people in the world.
her gaze fell onto his lips, it took him by surprise even in his drunk state. sadie quickly looked back up into his eyes, pretending the previous action didn't happen. the eye contact became heavy, the air getting thicker. both of their hearts picked up their pace, beating faster and once his gaze fell on her lips she felt her heart actually skip a beat.
the moment lasted a little too long because she expected him to look at her again but when he instead inched closer her breath hitched. it was happening, wasn't it?
he looked at her, waiting for her to do something. waiting to confirm that what was happening was in fact happening. she inched closer too, and that was all he needed.
he put his lips on hers.
his lips were soft, moving slowly, maybe a little unsure. the fear he felt at that moment only made his nerves worsen, his heart beating much faster.
her lips tasted like cherry, warm and perfectly smooth. her cold hands found a way to the back of his head. her cheeks flushed but she felt relaxed, her heart slowing down and returning to its normal pace.
his mind raced but he didn't want to pull away.
they were drunk, extremely drunk. they will not remember this in the morning therefore it was fine. what they were doing will not ruin their friendship and everything will be fine. at least he hoped.
the kiss continued. it wasn't slow and gentle anymore. the pace had quickened. she pulled him closer, tangling her hands in his hair. his right hand rested on her cheek while the other was in the sand, supporting him so he doesn't fall.
epiphany was what they both felt. maybe there was something there, to begin with, and this wasn't just a drunk kiss meant to be forgotten in the morning. maybe this was never meant to be one-sided. maybe everything in their life has led them to this exact night.
they pulled away, both out of breath. so many emotions were swirling in their eyes too difficult to decipher any of them.
she moved, now sitting between his legs. the eye contact was different now. it had a deeper meaning now.
he kissed a lot of people in his life but at that moment he didn't know what to do. she put her hands on his chest and a little roughly pulled him in, another kiss.
this one was different. while the first one was innocent, even if it was a drunk kiss it felt innocent. but the second one, it did feel like a drunk kiss. he knew he was going to regret it in the morning, and so was she, that was if they remembered it.
the second kiss was a mistake, she knew that too. they were reaching too far, probably biting a lot more than they could chew.
the right thing would be to pull away, but he couldn't. he was drunk and the rational part of his brain was lacking strength. this was something he had been waiting for years. this kiss was something that he imagined happening so many times but he never had the courage to do it. he was a confident guy but when it came to sadie he never had the guts.
he remembered the first time he realized he liked her. he was thirteen, and the fishers and the conklins were invited to washington to watch a ballet play sadie was participating in. she was really passionate for ballet back then and really wanted everyone to come.
they spent hours just sitting and watching the play, jeremiah was getting bored but then she walked out. her act was one of the last ones. once she entered the stage all his attention was on her, he was mesmerised. he couldn't look away even when steven called his name about a hundred times to show him something on his phone, jeremiah couldn't help himself but shush the conklin boy.
he watched her dance, suddenly the performance, the music and the stage were interesting. he clapped the loudest and took the rose susannah was supposed to give her so he could give it to her instead. when he returned home he kept thinking about it, about her, about the summer house and all of the times they shared.
before they knew it, the kiss had turned into a make-out session, and they were in too deep. all the thoughts just became a big blur, they were even thinking anymore and it showed.
"sadie!" piper's voice echoed. they both heard their names being called in the distance, but their brains didn't register anything, they were lost. "jere!" the sound was closer the second time.
hearing footsteps, they pulled away abruptly. both out of breath, jeremiah's shirt almost unbuttoned all the way. when piper approached them, they were sitting next to each other, pretending nothing had happened.
how grateful sadie was for her sister. it felt as if someone told her to come in that exact moment, to stop them because if she didn't sadie would be regretting much more.
she didn't know how she was going to face jeremiah. she wasn't sure how she would look him in the eyes because all she'd see is them on that beach, kissing.
