❛ stiffen that upper lip up little lady, i told ya
daddy's here to hold ya through the night ❜the morning of the debutante dance rolled around pretty fast. not only did it mark the end of the summer, but it also marked returning to the real world, a world that's a lifetime away from cousins beach.
sun invaded sadie's room as usual. she, again, forgot to put down the blinds but it seemed like this morning that didn't bother her much. that morning was the first morning in a long time she was more than just glad to be alive.
she inspected her surroundings, not getting up from the bed just yet, her gaze lingered on the white dress, her mother's dress.
before her thoughts could go any further she heard a knock on her bedroom door. sitting up in her bed, she called out, "come in."
she was expecting susannah but in walked someone else. "dad?" the man walked further into the room, carrying a tray of food, "good morning dear!"
she watched him in disbelief as he sat down at the foot of her bed. andrew crawford was the last person she expected to see this morning, "what are you doing here, dad?"
andrew chuckled, putting the tray on the nightstand, "susannah called, and told me my little girl is gonna be a deb." he smiled, genuinely smiled. he smiled so big and bright, sadie hasn't seen him smile like that in years.
"i thought you didn't want me to be a deb," she argued, confused by his appearance. andrew shook his head, "sadie, you've always wanted to be a deb. and i always wanted you to be happy."
"i thought that brings bad memories... like- like the house," she almost whispered. the crawford man sighed deeply, running a hand through his hair, "i met your mother at the debutante dance all those years ago."
getting dragged to the debutante dance wasn't on andy's list of things to do in the evening. putting on a suit, drinking expensive champagne, dancing, and watching a bunch of preppy girls find themselves a bunch of preppy husbands wasn't andrew's scene.
regardless of his dislike of the event, he was there to cheer on his friends that were participating. he didn't know why emily and diana wanted to be debs or why jamie and danny agreed to be anybody's escorts.
he sat at one of the tables, drinking champagne because he had nothing better to do, occasionally listening to who was supposed to make their entrance. "alison serena taylor, daughter of oliver and lori taylor. escorted by joe hayden."
"emily jessica johnson, daughter of steve and linda johnson. escorted by daniel jones." the woman announced and his two friends made an appearance.
"diana tallulah rogers, daughter of edward and claire rogers. escorted by adam griffin." the announcer continued. "eleanor rose parker, daughter of richard parker and daisy robinson. escorted by david lloyd."
"sophia lewis, daughter of tatum and sicily lewis. escorted by derek hart." another pair exited. "jana westwick, daughter of matthew and bethany westwick. escorted by jason killian."
"katherine penelope davis, daughter of joshua davis and angelina walker. escorted by james cooper." there on the stage, holding his best friend's arm was the most beautiful girl andy has ever seen.
there was something different between katherine and all the other girls, andrew couldn't pinpoint exactly what it was, but it was there, clear as day, pulling andrew in.
she was smiling brightly as she looked around the room. 'look at me! look at me!' a voice in andy's head screamed for some reason.
as if she could hear that voice, she looked directly at andrew. and, in that moment he knew, katherine penelope davis was the love of his life.
"my friend jamie, remember him?" she nodded in recognition, "he was katherine's escort. i remember watching them together the entire night. i was so jealous, i don't even know why." andrew chuckled.
"you knew she was the one," sadie whispered, closely watching her father. there was something so vulnerable listening to a man talk about how he fell in love with his wife.
andrew sighed, "yeah, i guess i did."
"i'm sorry," sadie spoke, now a little louder, no longer whispering, "i'm sorry for giving you grief about the house. you were right, it's- it's not the only thing of moms we have left."
"i should have consulted you and your sister first. i'm the one that's supposed to be sorry." his apology was sincere, guilt-ridden, and regretful. "i- um- i talked to the buyer, they said- they said we can use the house for the rest of the summer... say goodbye, you know."
jumping up, in excitement the girl hugged her dad. she hugged him so tightly, with so much gratitude and love. he hugged her back, of course. what neither of them could see were the tears that prickled their eyes.
"c'mon sades, eat your breakfast," he pointed to the tray he carried in, "then start getting ready, you have a big day ahead of you."
