"gigi boucheron, daughter of richard and cecily boucheron," the girl made her way onstage, meeting her escort in the middle, "gigi is a student at northfield prep school. she's ranked at the state level in singles tennis and is a talented vocalist. she raised $4,000 for north children's hospital." the pair stood to take pictures under the flower arch.
anxiously, sadie watched gigi and her date walk down the stairs and get into their position. she wasn't sure what she was so nervous about, the point of all of that was to have fun, learn new things and honour her mother's legacy, no pressure, right?
"sienna hart, daughter of derek hart and sophia lewis-hart," smiling brightly the girl exited. sadie watched sienna and her sister meet halfway, and smile even brightly at each other. "hey, stop tapping your leg," belly turned around to tell the girl, "you're gonna do great."
"she raised $4,000 to establish gender-neutral bathrooms on campus," the woman's words were followed by applause. the two girls posed for photos and then made their way to their designated spot.
"isabel conklin, daughter of john conklin and laurel park." belly looked back at sadie again, clutching her bouquet. "that's my cue," the girl smiled, making her debut, she met conrad in the middle. "a student at chesterbrook high school where she is captain of the varsity volleyball team. isabel is also an avid swimmer, and this summer raised $5,000 for the county women's shelter."
the pair whispered something amongst themselves, giggling and smiling. they took pictures under the flower arch, belly whispering 'prune' under her breath per susannah's detailed instructions.
the closer it was to sadie's turn the more she fidgeted. it was weird, she used to do ballet and have performances in front of hundreds of people, but she never felt stage fright like this before.
looking at the opposite exit of the stage, she found jeremiah's intense gaze. he was all dressed in a tux, looking handsome as ever. she was happy she was there with him, she was happy they were doing this together. everything jeremiah did was so effortless, he felt no stage fright, no nervousness, no jitters. he was the perfect date. he was the perfect date for her because just one look from him was enough to calm her down.
"sadie crawford, daughter of andrew and katherine crawford," taking a deep breath, she stepped on stage, this was it. she took the few necessary steps to get to the middle of the stage, jeremiah doing the same.
they stood there for a second, facing each other, him in a black tux, her in a white dress. at that moment it felt like the two of them along with everyone in the room got a glimpse of the future. that was a foreshadowing, it had to be. it just had to be.
taking her hand, he led her to the flower arch. "sadie is student at theodore roosevelt high school. she was a five-year member of the washington ballet society. sadie is a avid photographer with an internship at the grey magazine of italy."
"you look beautiful," jeremiah whispered. sadie smiled as the camera flash blinded them for a moment. she blushed at his words, her cheeks noticeably taking a pink hue. "thanks." jeremiah chuckled, noticing her reaction to a simple compliment. "this summer, sadie raised $5,000 for shatterproof, a national non-profit organization that focuses on ending the impact of addiction."
the pair descended down the stairs, taking their spot right of belly and conrad, near the table their parents were at. taking a flower from her bouquet she gave it to her father. tears shined in andrew's eyes, he was beyond proud of both of his daughters. the rest of the bouquet she gave to susannah. the blonde looked at the girl in disbelief and so much adoration in her eyes. she wasn't expecting that, but susannah and laurel were the closest thing sadie had to a mother and laurel already received a bouquet from belly.
fighting actual tears in her eyes, she returned to her spot next to jeremiah and curtsied. for some reason, that simple moment of giving susannah the bouquet made the girl emotional. in her head, she always imagined giving it to katherine.
"that was some curtsy, the queen would be proud," jeremiah joked, making the girl chuckle and lightening up the mood immediately.
it continued like that until all of the girls were in their position. then it was followed by the performance prepared by the escorts. but when it was time for the dance jeremiah was nowhere to be found.
sadie walked around the country club, checking every room she could enter but the younger fisher boy wasn't in any of them. she knew she was late for the dance, she knew that she had probably missed it but she was worried. her gut was telling her something was terribly wrong.
with jeremiah nowhere in sight she made her way back to the ballroom. as she expected the dance had ended, but what she wasn't expecting was for jeremiah to be there. he was standing opposite conrad, his back turned to her with belly standing next to them. she approached.
"we'll-we'll talk about this later, okay?" the older fisher brother reassured, putting a hand on jeremiah's chest in comfort. "no, it's important," he argued, wishing his brother would just listen to him for a second. "it's okay."
jeremiah lowered his gaze which sadie just then realized was teary, he looked at his brother in disbelief, a hint of betrayal in his blue eyes, "you already know, don't you?" he spat, "you've known this whole fսcking time and didn't tell me?"
"jere..." conrad whispered. before he could defend himself jeremiah's fist came flying toward conrad's face. the crowd gasped, sadie and belly cowering their mouths in shock as they watched the two brothers wrestle to the ground.
they weren't the only ones watching, a semi-circle was already formed around them, with overlapping chatter and grunting. everyone was in too much of a shock to do anything.
"stop it," susannah ordered, "both of you, stop it." as if she waved a magical wand both boys instantly stopped. and at that moment they felt like two little boys afraid to lose their mother. "what is going on?" both fisher brothers were on their feet by then, standing in front of susannah who had laurel by her side.
"mom..." jeremiah's voice broke. "we know, mom," conrad looked at his brother, "we both know." susannah's eyes glossed over.
"know what?"
