( summertime sadness ── lana del rey )
❛ think i'll miss you forever
like the stars miss the sun in the morning sky ❜it seemed like everyone was busy, which left the summer house empty again. upon finding this information out susannah immediately scheduled a session with sadie, she was the only one left that didn't pose for her painting.
sadie was dreading the portrait for a bit if she was honest. she hated posing but she never minded the time spent with susannah. she hasn't had a proper conversation with the woman for a long time. so, while the blonde prepared the paints and the canvas sadie was getting ready.
while she did her make-up she thought about what she was going to wear. no dress, shirt, skirt, or shorts seemed like the right fit for the painting and she wanted this one to be as special as all the previous ones.
she took the velcro rollers from her hair, staring at the mirror. one roller down, two rollers, three... and then out of the corner of her eye she saw a dress.
the dress.
hurriedly she pulled out the rest of the rollers, paying no mind to the fact that it might ruin the hairstyle she was going for. running to the other side of the room, she opened the closet door all the way. and there it was.
the blue dress with daisies her mother bought her years ago. it was the perfect moment to wear that dress for the first time. she wasn't sure why she ever packed that dress, it was like some part of her brain subconsciously knew she was going to need that dress.
pulling the dress out of the closet, and throwing the hanger on the bed, she got dressed and made her way downstairs. she was excited now, more excited than she has been in a long time.
making her way to the beach, she spotted susannah. "my girl, you look beautiful," the blonde beamed. sadie smiled, mumbling a thank you. she looked around and realized how amazing everything looked.
a blanket sat on the sand right next to a big rock, surrounded by the most beautiful purple flowers. in the background was the sea with a beautiful red sunsetting sky. "god, susannah, this looks magical."
"then what are we waiting for?" sadie laughed, sitting on the blanket she made herself comfortable. susannah sat in the chair, carefully placed in front of the canvas.
"little birdy told me you received a deb ball invitation," the blonde started almost immediately. sadie knew this conversation was waiting for her. after shayla and belly approached her about an open spot she thought about it a lot.
"i'm not sure," she hesitated, "i don't know a single dance. i don't have a date. i don't have a dress. it's all last minute. i don't know." she rambled, playing with the bracelet on her wrist.
susannah pursed her lips, "and if none of that was a problem, you'd go?" she questioned inspecting the girl's response. sadie thought about it for a second, "i guess, yeah." the blonde warmly smiled, "then good thing i took care of everything."
sadie furrowed her eyebrows in confusion but didn't dare to ask more. she knew she'd find out eventually, and she did. after they finished posing and painting, susannah instructed sadie to follow her.
with nothing but confusion on her mind, the girl followed susannah back into the house and into the room that her mother used to stay in. susannah suddenly came to a stop in front of the closet.
only when she stopped did sadie realize how empty the room looked without her mom in it. it looked the same, with old pictures on the walls. pictures from back when laurel, susannah and katherine were at college. pictures from katherine and andrew's wedding. pictures from the deb ball katherine attended. pictures of piper and sadie when they were little. and much, much more.
"i talked to jeremiah," susannah's words made sadie return back to reality, her head snapping away from the decorated wall to the blonde, "he'd be more than happy to be your date for the ball." as if jeremiah could ever say no to anything sadie related.
"conrad has a lot of free time on his hands, he volunteerd to teach you all of the dances you need to know," she informed further. once she finished her last sentence, she turned to the closet.
opening it she revealed the most beautiful white dress sadie has ever seen. "here," susannah reached inside and pulled out the dress, "this was your mother's. i think she would want you to have it." looking back at the wall with pictures she realized, it was the dress her mother wore to the deb ball.
susannah's morning was awful. the previous night she forgot to set her alarm which caused her to oversleep. while hurriedly getting ready she burned herself on her curling iron. the traffic was terrible and she barely managed to make it to work on time. and about an hour into her work day, she spilled her coffee all over her clothes.
that's how she found herself back at her doorstep struggling to unlock the door. the key was stuck. she stopped for a moment, took a pause and a deep breath to collect herself.
she was reaching for the key when her phone rang. sighing, she pulled the device out of her bag to check the caller id. it was laurel. "am i glad to hear a friendly voice. i just had the worst morning possible," susannah ranted right off the bat.
"susannah-" laurel's tone was serious, making the blonde immediately stop everything that she was doing. "susannah, t- there's been an accident. katy... she didn't make it, susannah. katherine is gone."
