As all the eyes in the room fell upon you and Beomgyu, you couldn't help but think maybe you should have made this break-up a more private matter. But alas, you couldn't change your actions now.
"Beomgyu, maybe we should take a walk?"
Beomgyu didn't say a word, only nodding his head slightly to indicate that he agreed. The pained look on his face only making the distasteful looks of the bystanders even worse. They had no idea what the context of the situation was, but that didn't matter. To them you were a cruel person who had just broken a poor boys heart.
You were desperate to leave the building, so when you finally made it outside and felt the crisp winter air on your face, you were more than relieved.
"Should we head to the park? Maybe that way we'll have less of an audience", Beomgyu spoke, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Yeah, that sounds like a good idea", you responded while beginning to walk.
The walk to the park was accompanied by an uncomfortable silence, only being interrupted every so often by the odd bird or car. It seemed as the city was practically deserted. The same could be said when you reached the park. Even the regular bird feeders weren't present.
"Wow, we really won't have an audience here", you said, hoping to break the tension that had been created between the two of you. However, it did not work.
"Why are you breaking up with me?"
You were taken aback, of course you knew that topic of conversation was the reason you both decided to come to the park, but you were not expecting Beomgyu to be so forthright with it.
"Well, you see there's quite a few reasons for it, starting with-"
"It's because of Yeonjun right? You're breaking up with me because you like him?"
"I- yes.. you know?", you blurted out.
"Of course I know, I'm not blind y/n"
"But if you knew, then why did you even date me?!"
Beomgyu sighed as he walked up to a nearby tree and leaned against it, his head tilted up slightly as he stared at the bare branches.
"I've known you've liked me for years, but I guess it took Yeonjun coming along for me to realise that I liked you too. But I guess I was too late", he ran a hand through his hair as he lowered his gaze to make eye contact with you. "I hoped Yoona and Yeonjun's engagement would mean you'd settle for me"
"Settle for you? Beomgyu you deserve more than someone settling for you"
He let out a slight chuckle, one that a few months ago would've made your heart flutter. But now, you stood there, unaffected.
"I know, but I thought in time you'd learn to love me again"
"Oh Beomgyu...", you frowned as you made your way over to him. "You'll find someone someday, but that person, it isn't me anymore"
"I know", he muttered.
You smiled slightly at the boy before turning away from him.
"I think it'd be best If I go Beomgyu, I'll see you around"
Beomgyu whispered out a goodbye which you took as your cue to leave. However, you could not describe how surprised you were when you reached the park exit, only to hear the faint sound of Beomgyu calling out to you.
As you turned around, you saw the sight of Beomgyu running towards you. He was sweating profusely by the time he reached you, even stopping for a moment as he tried to catch his breath.
"Beomgyu? What is it?"
"I know Yoona's my sister, but this arranged marriage isn't right. Regardless of her feelings for Yeonjun, I want to do what's right"
"What? What are you talking about?"
"The reason behind this engagement, It had nothing to do with my parents. It was all Yoona. She's loved Yeonjun for years and so, she set up the engagement to ensure you wouldn't take him from her"
"I- She did what?!", you yelled.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yeonjun was sure he would die from boredom at any moment. Having to endure the presence of Yoona every other day was mentally draining. She was so needy, desperate to have his eyes on her at every waking moment, but all he could think of was how much he yearned to have you back in his life.
You lived in the same house, attended the same school, you even both underwent tutoring by his own mother for christ sakes and yet he seemed to never see you anymore. Yoona and Beomgyu made sure of it.
He was certain the siblings were purposely making the two of yours schedule clash.
"Yeonjun, Yoona and her parents will be here for dinner soon. Perhaps you might like to come downstairs and greet them this time."
"They come here almost every night for dinner, I'm sure they'll not care"
Mikyong frowned as she walked into Yeonjun's room fully, closing the door behind her.
"You know Yeonjun, I really do hate seeing you like this"
"Like what?"
"You don't wanna do anything anymore, I can't even remember the last time you properly smiled. In fact, I'd rather you go back to your rebellious phase, at least you actually were doing something"
"Wow, I never thought I'd hear you advocate for me to break the law", Yeonjun smirked.
"That's not what I mean, I just want you to be happy. If I could stop this wedding from happening, I would"
The mentioning of the word 'wedding' was enough to cause Yeonjun to wince. How could he have even found himself in a situation like this. He wasn't some maiden living in the seventeenth century, he couldn't be forced into marrying a woman he didn't like. Yet, somehow, he was.
Perhaps it was his fathers way of punishing him. Yeonjun knew he had tarnished his reputation during his so called 'rebellious phase', but surely a forced marriage was too harsh of a punishment.
Maybe he could just run away. He could just leave Yoona alone at the alter and save himself from a life without love.
But he knew he couldn't.
His father had made it that way.
If he married Yoona, his father had promised to ensure y/n would be finically supported for the rest of her life. She'd be safe. He promised to make sure of it.
"It's for the benefit of both families, I have to do it"
No matter how much it pained him to do so, he wanted you to have the chance of happiness. Even if it was with Beomgyu and not him. In fact, when it came down to it, he'd pick your happiness every time. Even if it meant he had to sacrifice his own.
