I have to be strong

I guess I knew that it was coming. More and more humans had been appearing; and so many of my friends had already been captured. I just knew that my turn was coming. Then came the day he found me. I was out playing near a stream when I was suddenly pinned down by a Pignite. It attacked me with flame charge and then struck me again with take down. I was about to attack back, but a strange red and white ball hit me on the forehead and suddenly I was engulfed in darkness. I struggled, trying to break free, but the darkness wouldn't leave. I was trapped. I suddenly got the feeling that I was moving, I felt as though I were floating. "Alright! I caught my own Scraggy!" I heard the boy cheer.

Suddenly a strange sensation came over me and I was thrown back outside. Traumatized, I began to run in circles, trying frantically to remember where I was. Then the boy leaned down in front of me and fed me an oran berry. "Hey there, girl," he said to me, "I bet you're hungry. You're going to be my pokemon now, okay? How about I give you a nice name?" He stood back up and started pacing back and forth, mumbling to himself.

After a couple of minutes, he suddenly turned and called out, "Opal!" He scared me so badly that I cried out and dashed behind a nearby tree. "Hey, hey. Sorry girl. I didn't mean to scare ya. What do you think of the name Opal? I think it suits a pretty little pokemon like you," he said gently, rubbing my head. Well, this wasn't very bad at all. He seemed really nice. I really liked him, actually. Maybe being captured by a trainer really wasn't as bad as everyone said.

I fit in perfectly with the team. We were all treated with equal affection and we all had some cute and rather silly nicknames. One day we were out training when the boy held something up to me. It was round and shiny, and had a little hole in the middle of it. "You see this, Opal? It's called a TM. This one teaches the move 'Return'. I want you to learn it," he said as he placed the strange object on my head. It started shining really brightly, and I felt a strange tingle throughout my body. Then the thing disappeared and I could no longer remember how to use the move "Swagger".

"Cool!" the boy shouted, "Let's try it out! Opal, use Return on that tree right there!" He cried, pointing at a tall tree. I charged at the tree without a moment of hesitation. I thrust my arm towards it and heard the bark crack loudly. Then, to my surprise, the tree began swaying and fell to the ground! I had no idea that I had such power! My other moves were never so strong. The boy obviously felt the same utter surprise as me because he screamed with excitement and picked me up in his arms.

"Wow, Opal! You're so powerful!" He squealed as he danced in circles, swinging me joyously. I couldn't help but share his enjoyment. Despite how dizzy I was, I had never felt such joy in my life as I did at that very moment; and it was at that time that I promised myself: I won't let anything tear us apart.

I was right, because through every trainer and gym leader we defeated, every hardship we faced, and every new landscape we explored, I was right by his side. I mean, literally. The boy noticed how afraid I was of pokeballs and he never kept me in mine. My return attack continued to grow stronger and stronger and could never sink below the power of my other attacks. It wasn't long before I evolved and became a Scrafty. "Awesome! You evolved, Opal!" The boy praised me.

One day, we were heading towards Victory Road when a trainer spotted us and stopped us to have a battle. I stayed back next to him as he fought the first opponent. He chose to use Spitz, his Krookodile, first. I didn't mind, though, because I knew that I would eventually get my turn. Spitz took down the foe's Zebstrika in just two turns. The foe then sent out a Lilligant, and Spitz began to struggle. "Spitz, return!" the boy sent Spitz back into his pokeball, "Okay, Opal, you're up!"

I dashed forward and smirked at Lilligant, waiting eagerly for my boy's command. "Opal, use Crunch!" He said. Crunch? I thought, but I want to use Return!. I could never disobey my trainer though so I lunged and crashed into Lilligant, sinking my teeth into its arm. Then I jumped off of it and waited. It attacked with magical leaf, but the leaves didn't do much damage as they sliced at my arms. "Scary face!" The boy shouted. Once again disappointed, I glared at the Lilligant until it was paralyzed with fear. "Alright, now attack with Return!" He finished his command.
