Kol

Six months later

We were on the road again.

I sat in the front seat of Klaus' car, watching the moving truck following us from the mirror on the door. Kol's dagger was sitting in bottom of my backpack. Hopefully Klaus wouldn't check his brother's coffin until it was too late.

"You can't ignore me forever, little mouse."

"It's a good thing I'm still human then. I don't have forever." I wrapped my arms around my knees, drawing them closer to my chest.

"She speaks."

Don't answer. It'd be better not to.

Then again, I was so close to having Kol. "I've already missed half of the most important year of school because of you. It's not even just that. I became an adult and I wasn't with my twin. We've had every single birthday together our entire lives."

"That's the reason you've been so cold with me?" He chuckled. "Once Kol is undaggered, I'm sure this is only the first of many familial life events."

"And when is that going to happen? You keep saying it will and yet all your siblings are still in that truck."

"Patience love. There is a time for everything. We'll be in Mystic Falls soon."

I sat up. "Wait. We're going back to Mystic Falls?!"

Shit shit shit.

Klaus glanced at me with a raised eyebrow. "Isn't that where you wanted to be?"

Not with you there. "I didn't exactly leave on a good note." It wasn't totally a lie. "Can I at least warn Jer to stay out of your way so you don't kill him too."

"No."

"Klaus. They're going to try and kill you again and they might even use me as bait now that they know everything."

"Which is precisely why you may not go anywhere without Jamie and his friends."

Give me my phone, you dick. "I won't be a prisoner in my own hometown." No way in hell. "And I want to attend my senior year."

"Anymore demands?" He smirked.

"I want to go home."

Klaus laughed. "You'll go where I say so long as Kol lies in his coffin. If you'd like to live out your high school dreams, I'll allow it. Jamie will shadow you. Other hybrids will be near enough that should any one of your old friends so much as approach you, they'll swarm. You do not have control, little mouse."

Deep breaths. "Why are we really going to Mystic Falls?"

"I'll let you come clean first."

My heart dropped. "What about? You've controlled every second of my life for the last six months."

"Ah, but your secret predates our little arrangement."

Shit shit shit.

He couldn't mean...

How could he possibly know?

"What are you talking about?"

Klaus shot me an amused glance. "Oh don't play dumb, love. I sent hybrids the second I had a fair few. Your friends have been a pain in my ass from the moment I arrived."

I couldn't breathe. "Are you going to kill her?"

"I haven't decided yet."

"Klaus please." I hated how powerless I felt. He was going to kill my sister, and this time he'd be successful.

"You're lucky Elena's current status hasn't inhibited my plans or you'd be mourning her yet again."

"So your familial protection applies to me but not my actual blood?"

"I do this per my agreement with Elijah. That and I need Kol as calm as possible when he wakes and that will only happen if his precious soulmate is alive and well."

He'll be awake a lot sooner than he thinks. Would Kol be the same as he is in the dream world or would he be different? "What is this mysterious deal you have with Elijah, hm? You guys never did tell me."

"That's between us brothers, little mouse."

"Fine, but you have to let me near my siblings at least." I needed some sort of compromise. "I swear I won't go near the Salvatores."

Maybe I could convince Jamie that there's a loophole. If I could find one.

Klaus chewed the inside of his cheek. "I'll allow it. Though the second I catch wind of a scheme, I'll either take you away again or I'll kill that twin of yours. You can pass that little bit of information along."

"Okay. I'll do it. Just please stop threatening my family." He was insufferable.

"If your family would leave mine alone, I would."

"If your dramatic ass could've waited for me to handle the situation then it might have gone over better. You killed my fucking aunt to make a point."

Klaus' jaw worked. "Your friends locked me in their basement."

"You were trying to murder my sister!" My words echoed in the car, neither of us spoke and his hands tightened on the steering wheel.

If he was pissed off now, what was going to happen when he found out what I'd done? Maybe I should've gotten Elijah's dagger too. But Jaime had almost caught me.

I wanted my soulmate.

"Look. All I'm saying is that it wasn't a good play for you and Elijah to kidnap me on the way to that dinner. I was already losing their trust." Then he wouldn't have killed aunt Jenna.

Before Klaus could reply, his phone chimed. He glanced at it and then almost immediately pulled off to the side of the road. "Wait in the car."

"Why? What happened?"

He paused. "Stay. In. The. Car."

Then he was gone.

It would be smart to listen to his command, to not push him any more than I already had. But what if we were stopping because Kol had woken up?

I got out and crept along the side of the truck.

"There isn't a human within a hundred miles. We're in the middle of nowhere." Klaus had a tone I'd never heard from him before. It almost sounded like he was afraid?

"If you didn't have blood, Why'd you undagger me?"

Now would probably be the best time to announce my presence. Klaus was goi- He was in front of me. I backed away as quickly as I could, only to run into a chest.

"Hello Darling."
