And when the dark outweighs the light

And all hope is left behind

I'll still stand up and fight

Your POV

Meeting Dazai was sure an unexpected event. One that I couldn't predict. One that I would have preferred it to be just a bad dream before waking up covered in sweat. One that wouldn't make me question everything I have been doing for the past three-almost four years.

But it was painfully real. Almost as if I am destined to be constantly reminded of him. Of the life he now has. Of the different worlds we belong to. Because that's the only truth. He's not a Mafia member anymore. I don't know what he is now, where he lives, who his friends are, but at least I have the feeling he's doing something that makes him feel less miserable than before. And, despite having been ditched like a filthy dog, I can't blame him for wanting a better future. For wanting something better than the ghoulish and merciless missions from the dark side of the city. For wanting to forget about the pointless fights and deaths, for the blood and tears spilled throughout the years.

He's been working hard for a better life.

And I'm reluctant to see him die and lose everything he has.

That's why I protected him when he was about to be stabbed.

That's why I told him to make a run for it as I got rid of everyone there, even when I knew I was outnumbered.

And that's why I sighed in relief when I saw his partners took him away from there before he did something reckless that could cost him his life. But the image of him coming back for me made my heart beat with ease, lighter than these past months.

This time, he at least tried to stay by my side. And knowing that he somewhat cared about me gave me the strength I need to keep on fighting.

Now it is only me battling against a crowd of ability users seething with rage. Ready to murder whoever gets in their way. Taking into consideration the mission, having helped Dazai has been a mistake, but that doesn't necessarily mean I regret it. At least this time I've been able to protect him, unlike almost four years ago.

"Kera!!!" Interrupting my thoughts as I fight several ability users at a time, which cause me several minor injuries, Chuuya appears in the scene, returning from the basement he had been inspecting until that very moment. With his gravity manipulation and bare fists, he begins knocking out several men and women, yelling and cursing at the same time he rushes to my side. What shocks me, though, is that he seems to be only focused on me. Is... Is he actually worried? No, I don't think so. In any case, he must be wishing to hear my side of the story and how we both were discovered after all the efforts we had put to spot the couple a few hours ago, eliminate it and supplant their identities. Or maybe yes, we were partners in the past, and perhaps a bit of that bond still remains. "What the fuck happened while I was downstairs!?" That moment, he lowers his gaze, diverting it towards my injured arm, and he instantly freezes in the spot. "Hey, you're badly wounded..."

"It's nothing." I say, covering it with my palm on instinct and not wanting him to lose focus because of me. "For now, just help me out. I'm afraid we'll need to wipe out the organizations tonight." I almost order him, watching how he gulps on the sly. And it's true. His eyes are filled with insecurity, and he is probably thinking that I have lost my mind at this point. However, I cannot allow these people to destroy the city we live in. And it's not like we have another choice. This time, it's either them or us. "I'm going to use the full potential of my ability, Chuuya. You know what you have to do afterwards."

With a slight nod, I prepare myself and, bearing in mind that I might get killed at some point, I let my special ability run free.

Fate of the cursed ones.
