Chapter 3 : Settling In

My second day at my new job was much easier than the first. It wasn't even that I had too much to do the first day, I didn't. It was just the nerves. As always.

I arrived and was able to access the elevator and work floor on my own since I'd been provided a badge before leaving yesterday. That was a huge relief.

"Good morning Naomi!"

I turned to face my colleague Isabel. She was nice enough to have lunch with me yesterday which was something I would've never expected from someone that looked like she did. I didn't mean that harshly, she just had a natural resting bitch face.

She was also gorgeous. The kind of woman you'd get nervous standing next to because you knew all eyes would be on her. She was of a Hispanic descent, petite, and had a near perfect body and beautiful thick wavy black hair.

"Hey Isabel, good morning," I responded.

"Deion won't be in until a little later on today but I'm sure you knew that."

"Eh. Yes he mentioned it yesterday. I'm going to just start looking at some of the presentation details for the meeting at the end of the week."

"Alright boss lady. If you need any help let me know chica. Down to do lunch again?," she asked.

"Of course. Same place?"

"Hmm. I'm thinking Chinese today if that works for you."

"Absolutely," I agreed.

After we wrapped up our conversation I quickly headed to my office. It was so easy for me to get lost in conversation. I did not want to be logging in too late, I'm sure that kind of stuff was heavily monitored working for this big of a company.

I unlocked the door, flicked on the lights and sat down at my desk to begin pulling up some of the details I'd been emailed by Deion.

"Good morning Ms. Smith. I've attached the PowerPoint I plan on using for our meeting with Gen-X Logistics and some of the key points. If possible please closely look over these details and make adjustments as needed. I look forward to speaking with you further about the exact plan later on today. Thank you."
- Deion Rivers C.E.O of Rivers Inc.

I immediately began sorting through some of the key points and started to edit as I slowly sipped my coffee.

Deion was a great businessman but I could tell my assistance would definitely improve things. I admired working as a black woman for a black owned company, especially one that was so successful. I felt important and like I was working for a great cause.

After hours of having my head glued to my computer I'd finally completed all of the editing and revising. It was almost time for lunch. Phew.

This work wasn't physical labor but it definitely took energy to think this hard.

I'd still take it over lifting boxes at a warehouse again. That was the description of the job I'd held throughout most of my time in college.

It paid decent enough for me to be able to work part-time while still finishing up school but it was a lot on me physically.

That warehouse was also where I'd met Marcus. He'd approached me my first week working there with his charm, and it has worked.
