Chapter 44 : Family Matters Pt 2
"Yes it's me. I didn't think you'd ever talk to me again."
For a good amount of time I'd been positive I didn't want anything else to do with her, so she wasn't completely wrong in thinking that.
I sighed, "Well you're my mother."
"It's a relief to hear you say that. I've been clean Naomi, I've been going to AA. I never want to hurt you again."
She had never been to AA in my whole life that I was aware of, so this was at least progress. I just still felt uneasy.
Pacing back and forth down the driveway I stopped by the mailbox and continued to remain silent.
She continued, "Look I've been wanting to reach out. I just didn't know what to say or do. Felt like all I ever did was wrong by you."
"I'm pregnant," I blurted out. "I'm due in like a month and I'd really like if these little girls can have a grandmother that's clean, sober and loving to them."
Glancing at my phone screen, I checked to see if she had hung up. It was completely silent on the other end.
Nervously biting my lip I cleared my throat loudly, "Are you still there?"
"I'm here. I'm sorry I muted myself," she answered, I could hear the tears she was holding back.
"It's okay."
I rubbed my mouth with my hands as I waited for her to say something else.
"I-I. I'm just so happy for you baby. I know I wasn't a good mother and I can't apologize enough for that but I know you will be an amazing one. You have always been so strong."
These are words I never would've fathomed hearing from my mother, she almost never took any type of accountability.
"So I ran into my dad at this grocery store. He invited Deion and I over for dinner and that's where we are now."
She cleared her throat before responding, "Oh honey. You are wanting me to come by there I'm guessing?"
What was she going to say? How would this really go? Was a happy normal ending with both of my parents even possible for me?
"I would love that, but only if you're comfortable."
Nervously anticipating her response I covered my mouth and waited to hear what she would say next.
"Me and your dad haven't been on the best terms in I don't know how long. I just know I owe this to you."
Deeply, I let out a sigh of relief.
"Well I'm going to send the address and we'll see you soon."

Sitting back on the couch in my dad's living room I fumbled around with a piece of string attached to one of his throw pillows.
"I would ask if you were nervous but I already know you are."
I replied to Deion who was now sitting next to me with his hand reached out, "It's that obvious huh?"
