chapter thirty one.
--
THE FOLLOWING DAY, after waking up wrapped in Damon's arms, Harper found out, along with the Salvatore brothers, that Isobel had returned unexpectedly.
"Wait, what?" Harper asked in confusion as her and Damon trailed behind Stefan down the staircase in the Salvatore house. Damon was still tugging his shirt down his chest to straighten it out, and Harper was tugging her jacket on over her shoulders. Stefan had woken them up with this message, and while they both had been rather irritated by the wake-up, they knew it was as urgent as he was making it out to be.
"Isobel just showed up at their front doorstep. That's what Elena said at least." Stefan replied, glancing over at Harper.
"Well, that doesn't really help." Damon scoffed, hot on his brothers' heels as they neared the bottom of the staircase. "What is she doing here?" He pressed further, which only caused Stefan to shake his head.
"I don't know. That's what I'm gonna go find out." Stefan replied, finally reaching the hallway and turning the corner to be met with Katherine.
"I don't think that you should tell her that I'm here." Katherine interjected, whom Harper had almost forgotten was in the house in the first place. Sure, she hadn't been too happy about her and Damon's quality time spent together the day before, but she was over that within a few hours.
"What? Why?" Stefan asked, looking skeptical as he approached her.
"It's better if she and John not know that I stayed in town after I got out of the tomb." Katherine replied simply, to which Damon rolled his eyes.
"You're the one in cahoots with them. You made a deal with John that almost got me killed." Damon pointed out, causing Harper to nod slightly, looking at Katherine.
"Why would we want to help you?" Harper asked, raising an eyebrow.
"I did what I had to do to get out of the tomb, alright? Now, I'm reconsidering my alliance." Katherine explained, turning around with a small smirk on her face.
"What do you know?" Stefan asked almost immediately, sensing that she wasn't telling them the full truth.
"I know that I want Klaus dead, which puts me squarely on team you." Katherine replied simply, turning around to face them again. "Besides, if you ever need me to swap places with Elena again, the less people that know I'm here, the better." She explained, looking over at Stefan, who she knew she could win over with that statement. "Think about it, Stefan. Come on. Be smart." She added, watching as Stefan grabbed his jacket from the table.
"You know what, why don't you call Alaric and let him know that his wife's just showed up on his girlfriend's doorstep." Stefan turned to Damon, ignoring Katherine's response completely, since he knew she was right in the end.
Stefan glanced at the three of them before leaving the house, to which Katherine let out a long sigh.
"Well, I'm going to go find a drink... I am starving." Katherine stated, smirking slightly over at Harper before leaving the hallway.
