chapter five: foxglove
The next morning you wake up to a buzz from your phone underneath your pillow. You sit up immediately and your head pounds as though it was about to explode. You and Momoiro had a lot to drink and chatted until probably four in the morning. You smile softly when you see her beside you fast asleep with her mouth wide open and her arm hanging down the edge of the bed.
You reach under your pillow and see you've received a text from Kita. Immediately, you unlock your phone.
KITA: Osamu is officially missing.
You message him back.
YOU: What should we do?
KITA: Inform the others. We'll have a meeting with the kyodais at eight.
You put the phone down and carefully get out of bed. You don't want to wake Momoiro and make her feel like even more of a burden for being hungover. You walk into Atsumu's kitchen and see that he's already awake and making tea.
"Oh, you're awake, Y/N," he smiles. "Have a good night?"
"Huh?"
Atsumu holds up an empty bottle of vodka by the neck.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Momo and I..."
"It's fine, I get it," he nods as he tosses it in the recycling bin.
"Anyway, did you sleep alright?" you ask, awkwardly changing the conversation.
"Slept like a baby. I didn't hear the two of you sneak in here at all," he smirks.
"Tsumu I'm really sorry. I'll pay you back for it."
"It's fine," he chuckles. "I really don't mind. Have you heard from my brother?"
"No..." you trail off as you turn away from him and keep your head down as you sit at the kitchen table. In the meantime, Atsumu pours you a cup of tea. "But I heard from Kita. Osamu's officially missing..."
Atsumu freezes for a moment before placing the teapot down. "We should get down to the casino as quick as we can."
"There's a meeting at eight, you can sit in, too. But what do we tell Momoiro?"
"I will tell her before we leave," he assures you, "but I'll let her stay here. I don't want to kick her out or feel rushed to leave."
"Okay, I'll leave it to you then," you nod.
About an hour later, the two of you arrive at the casino to meet Kita. At precisely eight o'clock in the morning, Kita initiates a meeting with the Kyodais. It's a bit tense in the room, nobody knows what to say about Osamu's disappearance. They don't want to overstep and say something insensitive to their boss or Atsumu. You don't know what they're thinking, though, but you wonder if they blame you since you had a relationship with him.
"It was probably the leader of Kuroko's syndicate who did it!" Bokuto speaks up first. "They've always hated us and for no reason either!"
The other Kyodais murmur and nod their heads in agreement.
"That's true," Oikawa agrees. "Ever since your father was boss we've had a problem with them. I thought it was over with though. They have been bothering me or my group recently. I don't know what Bokuto's been doing though, no offense."
"Huh? What do you mean, no offense?" Bokuto grumbles.
"Don't worry about it," Kuroo pats his back.
"I'm just saying, maybe it wasn't them," Oikawa shrugs. You aren't quite sure what he's insinuating.
Ushijima crosses his arms and turns away from the group as if he doesn't care at all about the conversation. You notice this despite how the other kyodais begin to go back and forth deciding where to place the blame.
"What the hell are you saying, dude?" Kuroo speaks up. "Like hell, it wasn't them! They fucking despise us! Probably took Osamu to make some kind of deal with you, Boss."
You nod at his statement, though you're more focused on the way Ushijima seems to be having a whole other conversation in his head as he faces absolutely nobody. Afterward, Kita clears out the room for everyone except Atsumu. You sigh and fold your arms, disappointed with no new leads as you sit down at your desk.
"Y/N, what do you think about investigating Kuroko's-"
"What was up with Ushijima?" you interrupt, too lost in thought to even hear Kita's question.
"You mean why he was being a total dick?" Atsumu scoffs. "Ungrateful prick is-"
"The Shiratorizawa group has been acting a bit... odd lately," Kita intervenes. "Tendou keeps threatening that he and Ushijima are going to leave the syndicate."
"What?! Why didn't you guys tell me!?" you gasp.
"It's all empty threats," Kita shakes his head. "Nothing to worry about, Y/N."
"I think I should go pay a visit to Kuroko's syndicate then. I need to prove to them that since I'm the new boss I hold no animosity toward them. Perhaps if we can agree to a good relationship, we can rule them out as Osamu's reason for disappearing," you tell the two of them.
Kita shakes his head. "That's a bad idea. What if they are the ones who took him? I don't want to see another person hurt. None of us want to lose you, Boss. We care about you."
You smile softly. It hurts to make Kita upset, but you know this is something you've got to do. "Thank you, Kita, but I need to go."
You walk past the two of them to the door, but as you pass, Atsumu grabs you by your wrist. You look at him with narrowing eyes. "Don't you try to stop me either, Tsumu."
"I'm not going to," he replies. "I want you to find my brother but you need to be careful, Y/N. Those guys are bad news."
"I'll be fine. I'll bring protection if I need to."
Atsumu looks at you as though he's waiting for you to grab a gun.
"So will you come with me?" you instead ask.
His eyes seem to widen at your words as if he was hoping you'd ask. Perhaps that's why he stopped you in the first place but then chickened out.
"Of course. Anything you want, boss," he says formally in front of Kita.
You nod sternly, though a small grin upturns the left side of your lips. "Great, let's go then. You can show me the way!"
Kita deadpans. "You had this whole speech ready but you don't even know where you were planning to go?"
"Kita I haven't even heard of them before an hour ago," you admit. "I was going to ask before I left."
Kita sighs. "We need to get you more involved with the other syndicates and Kyodais, too."
You smile at his reaction. "As soon as I get back we can do just that."
"Good luck then," he nods. "Bring him back if you can."
