chapter twenty: lavender
You step into the passenger seat of Oikawa's car and allow him to drive you off without any more discussion about where you're going. However, it isn't long until you arrive at a small restaurant only a few blocks away.
"I didn't want to take you anywhere too far or else your bodyguard might really freak out if you're past your curfew," Oikawa jokes.
"No doubt about that," you agree with a sigh. "I'm sorry about before, I don't know what got into him. I guess it's just been a long day, you know?"
"I get it. You don't have to apologize or explain anything to me. Osamu was a great man and his disappearance has been hard on all of us. That being said, I know it's been especially rough on you both."
"It has," you nod as you think about the fight you just had at the front door. "I just wish we had answers."
"We all do," he sighs. "By the way, you don't mind this, do you? Because I don't want to force you into doing something you don't want. Would you like me to bring you back?"
"No, I want to be here," you smile, "and not just to spite Atsumu, either."
"You two have spent a lot of time together, yeah?" he then asks. "Do you get along well?"
"Yeah, we do. Pretty well most times," you share.
"Do you think you might have feelings for Atsumu?" he then continues to ask a bit hesitantly now.
"No, it's like I was just telling Aoi, it's really not like that at all," you say defensively. Thank god Oikawa isn't some kind of detective or he'd see right through you.
"So I'm not the only one who thought that..."
"I mean I can see why, but really, we're just friends," you insist.
"Okay because to be honest, I would like to think of our little outing tonight as a date if it isn't too soon..."
"A date?" you repeat. "Well, I suppose it would be a good way to take my mind off of everything else. So, sure. It's a date."
"Great, now come. Let's go inside before they close," he grins.
The two of you go inside for some Shabu Shabu. Oikawa is kind the whole time, showing great sympathy for your situation. You easily let down your guard and enjoy your night when you finally forget about all the other drama in your world.
"Did you know that Shabu Shabu is named that way after the sound the food makes in the hot pot?" he asks you once the food arrives.
"No, not at all," you laugh. "But I can totally hear that now!"
After you enjoy your meal with Oikawa, you open up about how you've been spending your time with Bokuto and Daichi and, more importantly, why. Oikawa listens carefully to your story about Kuroko and Akashi, agreeing that he doesn't think they're holding Osamu hostage, but that he does think they'll follow through with their threat.
"If you ever need more money you could help Iwaizumi and me," he offers kindly. "Most of the contracts we get are for millions, if not a billion yen at a time."
"Contracts? Like, for what?" you ask unsure if you really want to know.
"For murders," he says in a hushed voice as he leans in closer to you. You watch his eyes sparkle as the words spill from his lips. For a moment, he looks more like a psychopath than a friend offering to help. "You'd keep whatever you earn, of course."
"I don't know..." you admit a bit cautiously after seeing this new side of him. " After everything with Osamu, how could I possibly take someone's life? Someone who's a brother, a friend, a lover?" You then gasp at a new thought that suddenly pops into your mind. "What if that's what happened to Osamu? It'd make sense because of what we do... There could be ones out for you and me, too!"
"You act as though you just realized what being in the Yakuza means, Y/N," he chuckles. "Though I personally doubt that is what happened to Osamu, the reality is that it is possible."
"You doubt it? Well what do you think happened to him then since you're so opinionated?" you begin to talk a bit louder in the restaurant.
"Shh, keep your voice hushed before someone's ears catch onto something they shouldn't hear. I don't know what happened to Osamu, but I can assure you that nobody was out to get him. He was a well-liked guy, you know that don't you?"
"Of course I do," you reply as you sit up a bit straighter in your chair. "I just don't know what to think anymore," you sigh.
"I understand," he nods. "How about we make our own deal instead then, hm?"
"Our own deal?" you repeat.
Just then, the waiter comes to pick up your plates and leave the check. Oikawa opens his wallet and pulls out a hundred to place on the table. "Let's go for a walk."
The two of you thank the staff on your way out and walk through the parking lot, past Oikawa's car, and over to a bench nearest a small woods.
"Are you going to tell me what you mean before?" you ask as he sits and gets himself comfortable on the bench.
Oikawa pats the seat beside him and smiles, hoping you'll sit. However, you keep firm ground with your spot in front of him.
"Suit yourself," he sighs as he sinks into his spot. "The deal I'm offering is simple. Since you don't want to work with me, I'm offering an arrangement instead. You've got one week left to collect the money from Kuroko. If you don't get the money in time, I'll do you a favor. Before Kuroko's group strikes, I'll shoot him down first. What do you think?"
"You mean, kill them before they kill us?" you ask for clarification.
"Correct. Are you in?"
"Are you trying to say you don't think I'll be able to come up with the money?" you then ask him.
"It has nothing to do with your ability to get the money. I'm just saying I'll have your back in case anything goes wrong," he explains.
"And then what?" you continue, "If you kill Kuroko, what will you ask from me in return?"
"Simple. Just the money you had collected in anticipation to give to Kuroko. That's all, nothing else," he nods reassuringly.
"Okay then," you sigh. "If I don't come up with the money Kuroko wants, I'll give what I have to you in exchange for his life."
"Well then!" his voice booms as he jumps to stand right in front of your face. "We've got ourselves a deal. Ready to go back home?"
"Yeah," you nod. "I think I need to get some sleep."
"I'm sure you do," he agrees. "We all do."
