chapter eleven: black tulip
After changing out of your wet clothes and into something from your dresser in the room you used to share with Osamu, you meet back up with Atsumu by the front door.
"Are you ready?" he asks as you approach him.
"Yep, ready as I'll ever be for this," you nod.
Atsumu has already grabbed the organs from god only knows where he was storing them in the house you used to live in. The two of you then go back to the car. As you sit down in your seat, he pulls out a package from the back that looks as though it was delivered to him by Amazon.
"Here, this is the first one," he tells you. "Keep it with you for now, okay?"
"Sure," you nod as you take the eerily normal-looking package. Atsumu then drives off. The car is dead silent while you drive. You don't say a word, only sit deep in thought over how you actually almost let yourself go too far with Atsumu. It has only been a week since Osamu disappeared, how could you possibly be feeling this way about his brother?
Atsumu stops the car just outside a small house. He shifts the gear into park and quietly looks over at you.
"Now what?" you ask.
"Okay, all you have to do is go up to the door and knock on it," he says as though he has absolutely no idea what he is talking about.
"Have you ever done this before? Are they gonna be, like, mean?" you ask, hoping he'll give you some advice.
Atsumu shrugs. "I've never had to go up to a house before but because Osamu isn't around, this'll have to do. But I have a feeling the people you're going to meet will surprise you... Just act as though it's a regular delivery and you'll be fine."
You sigh. You really don't want to do this but you don't really have a choice.
"I know you don't want to do this, Y/N, but if something happens you'll be way less suspicious than me," he explains.
"Unless someone recognizes me as Yakuza boss," you say, hoping maybe you'll be able to change his mind.
"These customers don't care who you are. They just need the package."
You give up and decide it's better just to get the whole thing over with. You take the package in your hands with you as you step out of the car and walk up to the house. There, you knock and wait a moment until a young girl around the age of thirteen opens the door. She's so pale she looks like she's about to faint any moment.
"Who are you?" she asks weakly.
"Y/N!" an older woman yells as she runs up to the door. "Y/N, what did I tell you about opening the door to strangers! Especially at ni-" she speaks until she sees you standing in the doorway. She holds the girl by her hand, supporting her as though she was prepared for the girl to faint in her arms. "Y/N, are you alright?" she asks as she ignores you for the time being. You watch in shock at the little girl with your same name.
"Fine, granny," the girl whispers.
The old woman finally looks your way once more. "What are you here for?" she snaps. "We don't have any money so if that's what you're after then you can just go to-"
"I've got a delivery," you interrupt before she curses in front of her granddaughter.
The old woman leans forward and looks out the door both ways as though she thinks she is about to step into some sort of trap. "Oh?" she then asks. "Let me go get your tip," she giggles.
After slowly sitting the young girl down, the grandmother walks off. She soon returns in a rush with a paper bag like one you'd get from CVS when you pick up your prescription. "Thank you," you nod as you accept the money.
"No, thank you," the young girl smiles. "Thank you so much."
"You're welcome," you smile back. "I hope you feel better soon, Y/N."
Y/N's grandmother tucks the package under her arm and leans down to pick up her grandchild. "Come on, let's bring you back to your room. That's enough excitement for now."
When the old woman closes the door, you stand there for a moment still surprised at what you just watched. You then walk back slowly to the car and sit back down in the passenger seat silently.
"So?" Atsumu asks. "How'd it go?"
You silently hand him the stack of cash and Atsumu counts it.
"It was for a little girl. She was sick. Her family probably needed that organ and they probably need the money, too," you think aloud.
"Yeah, well we need it too unless you want your life to end, Y/N," he reminds you, thinking about the best for your syndicate.
"Of course not. I just wasn't expecting it, that's all."
"Sixty-five million," he then changes the subject. You look over at him and he smiles. "That's good. I was expecting that amount." He then hands you back the paper bag filled with money. "Here, you can keep it. Don't worry 'bout my cut."
"Are you serious? That would be a lot of money you're giving up..."
"Yeah, I don't mind helping you out. Besides, I don't want to die either," he grins.
"Well thank you," you smile back. "Let's keep going then."
Together, the two of you continue the jobs until the back of the car is completely empty of packages. You then get back to Atsumu's house around five in the morning. In the end, you made a little over seven hundred million yen. Atsumu sighs as he parks the car in his driveway.
"No offense, Atsumu, but I am never doing this again," you admit to him.
"Yeah, I understand," he laughs. "But that only means we'll have to figure something else out for you then."
You nod. "I know," you agree, knowing full well that half the reason you don't want to do this again is because you don't think you can spend that much time alone with Atsumu again without feeling overwhelming guilt but you aren't going to tell him that. Instead, you stay quiet until you finish washing up and go to bed.
Your eyes close as you lay in bed and the next thing you know you're tossing and turning. A dream invades your mind. A nightmare about Osamu. You envision him stabbed in the back by that pink-haired Akashi from Kuroko's syndicate. Tears stream down your eyes until suddenly you wake up with a gasp...
