chapter four: marigold

"Here ya go," Atsumu says with a smile as you sit behind his wood kitchen table. "A hot bowl of ramen just for you." Of course, he says it with such a warm smile like he always does. You'd smile back if you weren't so worried.

"Thanks," you reply quietly as he sits across from you.

His house is substantially smaller than Osamu's, but it's cozier. Even though you're both on opposite sides of the table, you feel so close to him.

"Have you heard anything?" you ask as you stir the hot noodles.

"Oh? You want to talk about it," he responds, surprised that you want to talk.

"I just want to know if you've heard something. I want news, anything, even if it's bad," you admit to him.

"Well I'm not sure about that but I did get a call from Kita while you were on your way here. He said to watch you and he'll take care of the rest so I'm assuming he's got it under control..." he says sadly, disappointed that he's left in the dark, too.

You nod at his answer. "Thanks, Atsumu. I'm sorry for putting you out like this."

"Don't worry about it," he shakes his head, "but there is one little thing I forgot to tell you..."

You look at him curiously and see a look of guilt spread across his face. Suddenly, your attention is stolen when you hear a noise from far away. The sound of a toilet flushing and feet shuffling towards the room you're in.

"Atsumu?" a woman's voice calls out. "Are you in the kitchen?"

"I've, uh, got company," he chuckles awkwardly.

You're completely shocked, your eyes wide as you look between him and the hallway. Your friend Momoiro steps into the room only dressed in a t-shirt too large for her. It's Atsumu's.

"Y/N!" she squeaks as her body tenses up. "I mean, Boss! What are you doing here?"

"Hey Momo," you say with a lopsided smile. "It's kind of a long story but I'm not here as your boss."

Atsumu stands up with his back straight as a nail. "I'll fill you in," he explains to her. "Y/N, do you want to shower or anything?"

Getting the hint, you stand up and agree. "That'd be great, thanks."

"There are some towels in there. Feel free to use whatever you want."

"Thanks again," you smile as you make your way past them. As you walk down the hallway, a sigh escapes from your lips. Just as your fingers reach the door, you stop to listen to the whispers from the kitchen. You can hear Atsumu explaining to Momoiro about the Osamu situation.

"And what about us?" she whispers nervously. "Now she knows the two of us are... you know, fucking!"

"So? She's your friend. I don't think she minds. She won't tell anyone." Atsumu reminds her.

"I know, you're right," she sighs. "Do you want me to go? You only have one bed after all. I don't think it'd be right for us to share it..."

Your whole body tenses up when you remember just how small Atsumu's house is compared to Osamu's. You've been here plenty of times but the one-bed situation completely skipped your mind. After all, you've never slept at his house before.

Atsumu is quiet for a moment as he thinks of his answer. "No, Momo, of course you can stay. I'm not going to kick you out unless you want to go. The two of you can share the bed. I'll take the couch."

"Okay," she sighs. "I just hope she isn't mad."

"She won't be," he assures her. "I promise."

"Thanks, Tsumu. And I'm really sorry to hear about your brother."

When you get out of the shower, Atsumu is standing outside the door as if he was waiting for you to get out. Were you in there for too long?

"Oh! Y/N!" he remarks as though he wasn't expecting to see you. "I set up my bed. I figured I'd let you and Momoiro take it."

You smile softly as you let him show you to the room. When you walk in, Momoiro is fixing up the pillows on the bed. Jesus, were they really fucking right before you came over? That would explain why it smells a bit... odd in the room, but you don't say anything.

"Thanks, you two," you smile at their generosity in changing their plans for you.

"No problem. I'm going to head to sleep. Have a good night, girls," Atsumu waves on his way to the door.

Once you and Momoiro are alone, you look at each other in quiet, awkward silence.

"Y/N, I'm so sorry. I know he's your boyfriend's brother, but-"

"So? You knew him before I started dating Osamu. Besides, Atsumu isn't mine so I don't mind it," you say with a reassuring smile.

"Well in that case," she sighs as she sits down on the bed. "Can I confide something to you?"

"What's going on?" you ask as you take the seat beside her on the quite comfortable and recently-made bed.

"I can tell he's still grieving over your brother's death. I know he's just using me to try to get over him," she admits quietly so Atsumu won't overhear.

"Kiyoomi's death was hard on all of us," you add as you look down at your hands in your lap.

Momoiro shakes her head. "No," she says as she opens Atsumu's nightstand and pulls out a black picture frame. She hands it to you. Beneath the glass is an image of Atsumu and Kiyoomi playing beach volleyball together.

"I didn't know Kiyoomi played," you tell her in a voice just barely audible.

"Yeah, he told me they've known each other for a long time, even before Atsumu joined the syndicate. He's liked Kiyoomi for a while but it seems as though it was unrequited. Or, at least, that's how Atsumu thinks of it since nothing ever happened between them."

"I had no idea..." you say as you hand her back the photo.

Momoiro places the frame back where she found it. "I feel sorry for Atsumu and because of that, I think I should stop hooking up with him. He needs to face the reality that Kiyoomi isn't here instead of hiding behind alcohol and well, me."

"He's got an odd way of grieving but it does make sense," you sigh.

"Yeah. Guess it's kinda like rebounding," she nods as she fixes the glasses on her nose.

You smile softly as you wrap your hand around her head and gently lean her against your shoulder. "I"m sorry, Momo. You've liked him for a long time, haven't you?"

"To be honest, Y/N, I don't know anymore. I'm attracted to him but I just don't know how I feel," she whispers.

"Hey, you know what I think?" you grin. "Let's go grab a bottle from his kitchen and forget about it."

"That wouldn't be a smart idea at all," she says as she picks up her head. "Let's get it! I don't want to be a sad fuck all night!"
