chapter seven: orchid

You sink down in one of the chairs in Kita's new office after spending about ten minutes searching for him.

"Where did he go?" you grumble to Atsumu already in the seat beside you. "We've looked everywhere for him."

"I'm not sure," Atsumu shakes his head, "but he's got to be here somewhere since he knows you left."

"Maybe we should split up and look some more," you say as you sit up in your seat. "We'll meet back here in twenty minutes if we don't find him."

"Alright," he shrugs. "That's better than any idea I've got. Let's start looking."

You then split up and decide to walk down to the casino floor in search of Kita. After a few minutes of looking, you spot Asahi and approach him instead. He's standing behind the craps table with a few other guys from Daichi's group.

"Asahi," you call out. He slowly turns around to face you as though you just caught him selling his soul to the devil. He looks so nervous, too, like he's about to pass out. "Are you okay?"

"Fine, I'm... yeah," he says in a jumble of words as his voice cracks.

"I'm sorry to interrupt your game but have you seen Kita anywhere?" you ask, ignoring his odd behavior.

"No but I assume he'd upstairs be in his new office or something," he continues to speak strangely.

"I've already looked there, but thanks for your help anyway," you sigh.

"No problem," he says with a nervous smile.

"C'mon Asahi, don't pussy out now!" Nishinoya then laughs wickedly at his friend.

Asahi gulps from a dry throat. "Sorry I couldn't be less helpful. I gotta go."

"That's, uh, alright," you grin to dispel the awkwardness before he turns back around. You then walk off, wondering where the hell Kita could be. You look down at your watch. It's already been twenty minutes. You should go back to Atsumu.

When you get near Kita's office, Atsumu calls out to you. You turn around and see him walking up from behind you. "Have any luck?" he asks.

"No."

"Me neither," he grumbles. "Guess we should just sit and wait."

You nod and open the office door only to find Kita and Ushijima now standing there staring at each other without a single word.

"Uh, are we interrupting something?" Atsumu asks despite how neither of them glances your way.

"We can come back another time..." you add.

The two of them continue to stare at each other for another thirty seconds before Ushijima walks out and you can finally take a breath now that the thick tension is cut. Ushijima hardly even notices as he politely closes the door behind himself.

"What was that about?" you ask.

"Shiratorizawa has broken apart. Ushijima has decided to leave the syndicate and so has Tendo."

"How long were the two of you staring at each other like that for..." Atsumu then asks, curiosity getting the better of him.

"You mean talking? I've been trying to convince him for the last fifteen minutes," Kita sighs.

You and Atsumu look at each other, both thinking it's rather odd how they had a whole conversation for that long without saying a single word.

"Wait, back up," you say as you finally realize what Kita was saying. "Broken apart? What does that mean? Why did they break apart?!"

"There was a disagreement about something," Kita shrugs. "I don't know what it was but apparently it was big enough for Ushijima and Tendo to wish to leave."

"But I thought you said it was all just empty threats!"

"Maybe you should have asked what the issue was," Atsumu scoffs. You nudge his arm and Kita doesn't say anything in response to his comment.

"So not all of the Shiratorizawa members are leaving?" you then ask, confused as to what could have caused such an issue.

"No, not all of them but I'm going to need to find a new kyodai for them as well as my group," he sighs.

"What the hell are we going to do now? Can we really just let them walk out on us like this?" you ask.

"It's either that or we kill 'em," Atsumu tells you.

"We can't just kill them without knowing why they're leaving!" you insist.

"Don't worry, I'll figure it out," Kita says with crossed arms.

"Do you always need to put the entire burden on your back?" you sigh. "We should figure it out together, don't do it alone!"

Atsumu interrupts once more, this time changing the whole conversation. "On the bright side, we found out where my brother is not. Kuroko's syndicate did not, in fact, take Samu."

You sigh as you sink into the same chair that you did a half hour ago. "Great, I almost forgot about that bad news. Thanks for reminding me, Tsumu."

Kita looks at the two of you confused about what happened and waiting to hear more. You tell him about the whole ordeal, ending with how Atsumu went snooping and ruined the entire thing.

"Hey, I went looking for Samu! I didn't think Kuroko was just gonna hand him over to us, did you?"

"Of course not but that doesn't mean you can just go through all their shit!" you shout at him.

"Well what else would you have me do?!" he shouts back.

"I don't know, maybe let me handle it as you fucking boss?! Ten billion yen, Atsumu! You cost the syndicate ten billion yen!"

"Don't you have that much?" he asks, seeming almost genuine in his question.

"What the fuck do you think!? Of course not!"

"You'll have to find a way to earn it then," Kita steps in, reminding you just whose office you are in this time.

"Huh? What do you mean?" you ask him, finally ignoring Atsumu.

"You said it yourself that you want to pull your weight around here. I trust you can get the money so I'm sure you'll be able to do it yourself."

"But how? I don't make that much at the laundromat in a month," you ask a bit deflatedly.

"Geez, don't be such a baby. I'll help you," Atsumu scoffs instead of continuing to shout or belittle you.

"Really?" you ask, eyes growing wide with hope that you won't get every single person you know killed.

"Yeah, but you gotta promise to do as I say. No fighting over my rules!"
