chapter twenty three: begonia

Just as you leave the casino around four p.m., you tell Oikawa you'll be able to meet him up outside of the café where the two of you typically meet. However, you give yourself a bit of legroom with time so you can use the bathroom and just in case there's some traffic along the way.

However, you get there before the agreed-upon time, so you walk across the street to the neighborhood park for a short walk. You take the paved path and find yourself behind the small bathroom building when you hear a familiar voice. Oikawa's. You hide around the side of the building to listen to their conversation.

You watch as Oikawa meets with Ushijima and hands him multiple stacks of cash. "As much as I hate to admit it," Oikawa sighs, "you're right. Completely lacks the ability to do the job properly."

"Akira always worked well with other gangs. He was annoying, but reliable. It's quite disappointing how the management has changed this drastically," Ushijima agrees.

"To be fair, it wasn't going horrendously until she got Kuroko's syndicate all pissed off," Oikawa scoffs.

"I almost forgot," Ushijima then nods. "How does that seem to be going?"

"Let's just say those assholes won't be getting to me when they realize she doesn't have the cash."

After hearing their conversation and coming to the conclusion that Oikawa has absolutely no intention of helping you out, you walk away. You send him a quick text saying 'something came up, won't be able to go' and drive to your laundromat instead. Initially you think about talking to Atsumu, but you don't really feel like hearing him say 'I told you so" thirty million times, so you go to see Rhodes instead.

When you get to your laundromat, you practically reenact the whole conversation between Ushijima and Oikawa.

"Woah, Woah, slow down, Y/N. Take a breath. I haven't seen you in like twenty two chapters, this is a lot for me to take in. Slow down and start at the beginning."

You reiterate everything that's happened from the day you lost Osamu up to today when you were supposed to meet up with Oikawa. You don't forget a single detail, not even how you technically slept with Atsumu last night.

"Huh, I see," he says vaguely as he sits down in the only good chair in the office. "So what you're saying is that you're totally head over heels for Atsumu but you don't know what to do about it."

"What?! No, that's not what I'm talking about at all!" you complain.

"So then you don't?" he asks vaguely.

"Don't what?" you sigh, remembering why you don't always go to Rhodes for advice. He always steers the conversation to be something that interests him.

"You don't like Atsumu," he then explains.

"Of course I like him, but we're just friends. It wouldn't be appropriate to be anything else, anyway," you say as though you've rehearsed your answer a hundred times. "So, to be perfectly clear, no. I don't like Tsumu that way."

"Alright, fine then. Were you the one who killed Osamu?" he asks, leaning forward in his chair with anticipation building in his eyes. "Be honest now. You know I won't tell anyone."

"What the fuck!? Of course not! I was waiting to propose to him! Didn't you hear that part?"

"Well if you subconsciously have feelings for his brother then maybe..."

"God, Rhodes, what I'm trying to say is that I think maybe it was Oikawa and Ushijima. I mean, Oikawa is a hitman. What if they offed Osamu just to fuck with me?"

"Well that makes you sound seriously self-centered," he gasps, leaning back again in your chair and putting his feet up on your desk.

"But maybe that's why Shiratorizawa broke up. It could be because of the way things happened with my dad and my brother and-"

"Hey, no, let's not jump to conclusions," he interrupts as he strokes his chin.

"But that's what you did about me and Tsu-"

"Shh," he interrupts once more, "that's not the point. I'm just thinking out loud. As much as I hate to agree with you, Y/N, it is possible that your truly self-centered idea could be correct."

"Rhodes, tell me something. Do you know where Daisho is?" you ask, now in a hurry as your brain begins to move at a speed way quicker than your conversation.

"You know I do. He's on the opposite side of town just like you told him to be when you banished him," he teases. He then pulls out his phone and with a few taps and clicks, he sends you the location. "There ya go, he's all yours. Not that I think he'll be very happy to see you."

"It's not my favorite idea either, but it's all I got. I think he might be able to help, or else I wouldn't want to see that fucking psychopath, either," you scoff.

"Well, let me know how it goes," Rhodes grins as he puts down his phone. "Don't keep me in the dark for so long, k? And I know we've got that automatic payment thing going now but it gets lonely sometimes here."

"Now's not the time, Rhodes," you sigh as you gather up your belongings. "If you have time to complain you have time to work. We can always talk about this seriously at another time if we need to but just know that if I hire someone else it's coming out of your pay. How is everything running here, by the way?"

"Smoothly, absolutely splendid. No reason to hire any help at all. I've got it all under control, Y/N. I love my job, no complaints!" he grins like an idiot.

"Mhm, that's what I thought. See you later, Rhodes."

"Have a good one, boss!" he waves as he shows you to the door.
