chapter twenty two: wild rose

After your chat with Atsumu, you agree to let him spend the night in his room. You wouldn't really want to go in there after what you know just went down anyway. Either way, after covering yourself under a layer of blankets, you find yourself absolutely freezing cold.

Not trying to be rude, you suffer through it until a few hours later when you're still staring up at the ceiling unable to get any rest. You decide that you'll turn up the heat in the house for now, but wake up early and adjust it first thing. So, you get up and walk across the house to the thermostat. However, the damn thing isn't working! Maybe Brielle fucked with it on her way out of the house.

With a sigh, you quietly walk over to Atsumu's room. You knock on the door and to your surprise, he answers it. You're not sure if it's for the same reason as you are up, but for whatever reason, he hasn't been able to sleep either.

"It's busted. It somehow broke while blasting cold air," he groans when he goes to check the thermostat. "Jesus, what's next?"

"It's not a big deal. Do you think I could just borrow another blanket or something?" you shrug.

"Just bed sheets and towel," he replies as he walks back towards his room.

"That'll be fine. I don't mind."

"Huh? No way," he says as he stops to turn and face you. "I'm not going to just let you freeze all night by yourself. Besides, you should've told me something sooner," he shakes his head.

"Well then what do you suggest?" you ask.

"Grab the blanket. We'll just have to share," he tells you.

"Wait what," you call out as your brain tries to process what he's telling you.

"Forget it. Just, come on," he shakes his head as he reaches out his hand for you to take. Hesitantly, you accept it and allow him to guide you into his room. He shuts the door with his foot as he shows you to the bed you've already spent countless nights in, but none like this.

Cautiously, you pull back the covers on the side of the bed that's still somewhat made up, hoping whatever shenanigans were happening didn't occur on your side of the bed. Once the two of you lay down, you both roll in opposite directions.

"Night, Y/N," Atsumu says as he turns off the light.

"Goodnight," you reply quietly, hoping sleep takes you quickly.

"I'm sorry for bringing that girl over and waking you up," he then adds. You can hear him roll over to face you. Your face heats up, knowing that he's laying directly behind you, probably staring at your backside. You don't know what to say to him. "I don't even know why I brought her over."

"No, it's alright. I get it. Like we said before, it's your house," you reply without an inch of movement.

Atsumu gently places his hand on your shoulder. Your body burns with heat at his touch, but you have absolutely nothing to say to him.

"Y/N," he calls softly.

"Tsumu, I'm tired. Let's just sleep, okay?"

"Sure," he agrees sadly, removing his hand from you and turning away once more.

The next thing you realize, your whole body is warm. It's the complete opposite of how you felt last night. "Morning, Samu," you whisper just before realizing you're laying in a different position now than when you fell asleep... and the fact that you're not with the person whose name you just called out. You're now laying mostly on your stomach with your leg between Atsumu's and your head in the crook of his neck.

Atsumu hums with his eyes closed, not processing who's talking or what you just said. "Hey, baby, how'd you sleep?" he replies subconsciously.

But now that you realize what's going on, you sit up and back yourself away from him. As you do, the covers fall down your shoulders and the cold hits you even harder than it did last night. "God, it's even colder now," you say with chattering teeth as you force yourself to lay back down further from Atsumu this time.

Atsumu's eyes shoot open as he hears your voice this time. He sits up this time, scooting back so his head hits his headboard. "I'm really sorry, I didn't mean to say that," he chuckles awkwardly as he blinks his eyes to get a better handle on the situation.

As he sits up, you notice the reason why you were so warm beside him. At some point last night he must have taken off his shirt because he's not sitting shirtless beside you in the same bed. "That's okay. We should, uh, probably get up now."

"Yeah, let's get something to eat."

While the two of you have a quick breakfast at home, you chat and avoid talking about anything from yesterday or earlier this morning.

"Do you have any plans today?" he asks just as he finishes his glass of orange juice.

Just as you're about to respond, your phone lights up. "Not sure," you say to him as you simultaneously look down at the phone screen. A message from Oikawa has popped up. "Probably just working and hanging out with Aoi and the other girls," you smile. "And you?"

"I think I'll be here," he shakes his head. "I need some time to myself. Don't think I really got that much sleep last night, either," he admits.

"Well hopefully you'll find something," you reply. "If not, and I get home at a reasonable time, maybe you'll be free for dinner?" you then ask.

"I'll clear my schedule," he smiles. "That'd be great."
