chapter thirty six: white lilac

After you, Atsumu, and Kana meet up with Rhodes, you all run straight into his car. Rhodes then drives off as fast as he can, taking you away from the pier for good. You try to collect your breath and your thoughts as he races down streets before finally pulling into the lot outside of his apartment. Though it's small, and definitely not in the best neighborhood, you're beyond appreciative that you're now finally safe.

As Atsumu helps you out of the car, Rhodes does the same with Kana. You follow the two of them upstairs to his apartment. Inside, you and Atsumu slowly wander over to his blue couch while he takes Kana down the hall into another room.

While you and Atsumu are alone, he helps you sit down and takes the seat beside you. He looks at your face worriedly, noticing all the fresh bruises and scrapes left behind by Kuguri against your face.

"What happened?" he asks cautiously as he takes your puffed-out cheek in his hand.

You try your best to explain to Atsumu the whole situation, but your brain is so foggy and you are literally on the verge of tears which makes it so difficult to explain. You tell him about Daisho and the hole in the wall, about your stay with the other girls, and about how Kuguri found you, but your stories are all out of order and don't make much logical sense.

Atsumu sighs and gives up waiting for your explanation. You shouldn't owe him any explanation anyway, none of this is your fault and he knows that. So instead, he gets up and walks over to the kitchen. You watch him as a few tears roll down your face. He grabs a cup and a small rag, runs both of them under the sink, and comes back to you.

He gently hands over the cup of water for you to drink. Though you're in absolutely no mood for it, you accept it anyway and take a small sip. When you hand it back, he places the damp rag against a few of your scrapes.

When you wince away, Atsumu gently cups the back of your head and holds you still. "It's alright, Y/N, this'll help. I promise. I know I can't take away all the pain but at least let me try. I'm so sorry this happened to you. I can't believe I let you slip away from me..."

As he trails off, he places his forehead against yours. You wish you could smile, but all you can do is cry. You reach your hand to the side of his face and slowly bring his lips to yours. You're sure all he can taste is salty tears, but the gesture is enough to show him your gratitude.

"I don't want to lose you, Y/N," he whispers. "It's all my fault."

"Don't say that," you respond quietly. "It's not your fault. You won't lose me."

The second time you kiss him, you hear someone clearing their throat from not too far away. When Atsumu pulls back, you see Rhodes standing nearby.

"Sorry to interrupt, but Kana just passed out in my bed."

"Oh," Atsumu clears his throat before he speaks. "Is she alright?"

"She's fine, I just don't want to disturb her," he shrugs. "But," he then continues as he takes a step closer to you, "that was my only spare room. I don't really have anywhere else for you two to, uh, sleep... Hopefully," he says, whispering the last word to himself.

You and Atsumu look at each other not really sure what to say.

After about an hour, once Rhodes gives in and sets up an arrangement for the two of you 'like the children you are,' you set up the couch as your bed and slide yourself under the blanket Rhodes had given you. Atsumu lies down just beneath the bed. Though Rhodes told him he could sleep anywhere on the rug, he chose to stay as close to you as he could.

You sigh as you stare up at the ceiling, unable to fall asleep. "Tsumu?" you whisper, "Are you still awake?"

"Yeah, I'm here," he replies, causing a tiny grin to grow on your cracked lips.

"Thank you," you tell him, "and I'm sorry."

"For what? You have nothing to be sorry for," he responds as he shifts around in his spot to sit up. When you look to the side, you see his worried face watching you curiously.

"I should have told you where I was going," you shake your head. "I don't know why I didn't, I feel so shitty for leaving you in the dark."

"Y/N, you had no idea any of this bullshit was even going to happen. It's okay. Really," he assures you.

As another horrible attempt for a smile blooms across your scarred face, Atsumu reaches his hand to the back of your head and kisses you softly. "Goodnight, Y/N," he then whispers.

"Night," you hum as he pulls away. He then looks down at your hand and takes it in his as he lies down. Your heart flutters at the gesture. Though he's laying beneath you, he's still doing every little thing to make sure you feel the same. You can feel your heart rate quicken as he squeezes it tight and calls your name once more.

"Yeah?" you respond as you close your eyes, trying to relax.

"The other night when you saved my drunk ass from the bar. I mean, for so long... probably since I met you. Shit, I've always had feelings for you. I just didn't know if I should tell you- if I could tell you- I didn't know how you'd react 'cause of-"

"Don't," you interrupt. "Please, I already know what you're going to say 'cause I feel the exact same."

"You do?" he asks, almost choking on air upon hearing your confession.

"Yeah," you chuckle. "I like you, too, Atsumu. I couldn't imagine my life without you. You've helped me get through so much. You really mean the world to me and the longer I stay with you, the more I want to be with you."

"Then I hope you will," he smiles to himself.

"When you ask me while I'm not half asleep and my face doesn't look like it's being affected by a Stinging Jinx."

Atsumu laughs at your response. "Glad to see you're feeling better."

"All thanks to you," you happily hum. "Now, for real this time, good night."

"Sweet dreams."
