chapter forty two: calla lily

That afternoon, you begin to put Rhodes' plan into action. You return the ring that you had originally purchased for Osamu and instead, you buy a separate one for Atsumu. You leave the store feeling really good about the whole thing. You even have somewhat of an idea of what you're going to say to Atsumu. However, the second you see him, you completely freeze up. And that is why it's not until about a week later, do you continue the plan.

It's taken you exactly five days until you work up the nerve to ask Atsumu on a date to Shinjuku Park. When you get there, though, it's absolutely gorgeous. The view is breathtaking, both because of your surroundings, and because you are finally holding Atsumu's hand in public.

You find a spot on top of a grassy hill to sit with Atsumu and have your chat. As you sit down, you feel as though you're about to pass out. You hope what you're about to say doesn't come off wrong and you're just so nervous you might cause yourself to fall unconscious.

"Are you okay?" Atsumu asks, noticing this change in your behavior. "You don't look so hot?"

"No, no, I'm fine," you horribly reassure him.

"If you needed a minute to sit down you could've just said that."

"Seriously, Atsumu, that's not it. I just have something to tell you and I... I don't really know how to say it."

Just face it, you tell yourself. I'll be better off once I get everything out. He's not going to be mad, I know that, I just hope he isn't put off by the whole thing.

"If you don't want to talk about it, then don't force yourself," he responds caringly. His soft voice is almost enough for you to break down into tears. But instead, you muster up all your strength and pick up your head to look at him. You remember now. You had told Atsumu the truth about the ring and its meaning.

"Last time we talked about it, I could tell you felt a bit awkward," you explain.

"Then just begin with what you can and if it bothers me, I'll be honest."

"Okay," you nod, taking a deep breath. You reach into your pocket and pull out the small ring box. "Do you remember when I told you about the ring that I had gotten?"

"Yes," he responds cautiously, not sure where you're going with this as you hold the box in your hand.

"I returned it. I couldn't keep it and I didn't know what else to do with it. But what I wanted to do," you begin as you open up the box slowly, "is to get something for you instead. It's not an engagement ring, don't get me wrong. I just wanted you to have it as my promise that I will always care for and adore Osamu, but that you are the one I want to give this to."

Once the box is open, you reach up to the necklace around your neck and gently take it off. You then lace the ring inside the chain and hand the two connected pieces of jewelry over to Atsumu.

Atsumu smiles when you place it in his hand. "Do you remember when I gave you that bracelet for him?" he asks.

You pull back your sleeve, revealing the small piece of jewelry with a cherry blossom and your first initial. "Of course I do."

"I was kinda pissed that I had to give it to you even though it was from him. I thought the dumbass should've given it to you himself instead of catching me up in the middle of it. But now that I think back to it, that smile you gave me and the feeling I had after just proved to me how much I was jealous of Osamu. I loved you, Y/N, even then. Even when I was a fucking asshole all those times I just... I'm sorry."

"You know, even though you were a dick sometimes, you were always there for me no matter what and it's my fault for not realizing that sooner," you apologize to him.

"Do you think if he was still around would you still be with him instead?"

"I think I would have been stupidly in love with the wrong person," you tell him truthfully. "You know I was going to propose but I think that if I did, it would have been a mistake. I'm so unbelievably happy with you and it's you who I want to spend the rest of my life with."

The moment you finish speaking, Atsumu reaches his hand up to your cheek and pulls you into a rough kiss. "I fucking love you so much," he says with his eyebrows knitted together in pure concentration. "I love the ring. I love you. I'm so happy you feel the same."

You smile as you listen to how sincere Atsumu is. "I love you, too, Tsumu. I hope you know how much you mean to me."

"With you, I am the luckiest person in the world."
