chapter eighteen: cosmo
When you get back to Atsumu's place, he cooks the onigiri for the two of you just like he had offered. You wanted to help him cook as well, but his silent demeanor turned you off from asking. Eating is silent, too. Neither of you says a single word until both of your plates are empty. To be honest, you don't really feel like talking either, but eventually, Atsumu speaks up.
"I'm sorry, Y/N. I didn't mean to be rude by not talking to you. Guess it just felt weird thinking about my brother again. It's been so long, I hardly see any hope of him coming back anymore," he explains.
You nod, unsure of what to say in response. You feel guilty every day for spending so much time with Atsumu when you should be out investigating this whole Osamu ordeal with Kita. If it wasn't for Kuroko's syndicate being total assholes, you probably wouldn't even be here with Atsumu at all. But the thought of that, too, makes your stomach churn. You feel awful for being with Atsumu, but you also hate the thought of not being with him.
"That's okay and I'm sorry, too, for bringing it up. I should have thought before I said it. I know Onigiri is his-"
"You've got nothing to be sorry about," he shakes his head. "I say we both move on. I'll clean up. Why don't you take a break since you were the one who was working all day."
"That's alright," you smile softly at him, "I don't mind helping out."
"Guess I can't say no to that," he smiles back as he stands with his empty plate in his hand. "I'll wash, you dry."
After the two of you finish cleaning, you walk outside to his backyard and lay down in the grass. The view from your spot staring up at the sky is quite beautiful. At your old place, you were never able to see the stars like you can here.
A few minutes later you hear the door open and Atsumu walks outside. You can hear his footsteps draw closer and the grass parting to let him through. He sits down next to you and gazes up just the same.
"I was never one to stare at the stars," he quietly admits to you. "I never saw any purpose in it. I mean, they're so small and most of 'em look the same."
You smile at his honesty. To be honest, you've thought about it that way before as well. "I get that, but to me, it reminds me of how big the universe is and how small I am. Sometimes it calms me down and I think about how small my problems are in the grand scheme of things."
"Well I don't know about all that," he chuckles, "but they do look nice. However, this talk about existential problems makes me hungry. Care for some dessert?"
As you look over at him, you sit up and find two small pieces of cake in his hands. With a smile, he passes you one. "What's all this for?" you ask.
"Just to thank you, ya know, for everything we've talked about before... and because of last night."
"Last night?" you repeat as you comb your mind wondering what he could possibly be talking about. "What happened last night? I'm the one who fell asleep on you."
"Yeah, I know. I mean, that's not... Forget it, let's just eat, okay?" he says, stumbling over his words.
"Sure," you smile as you accept the dessert. "Thanks, 'Tsumu."
Atsumu nods and the two of you enjoy your cake in a quiet peace this time instead of an awkward tension.
When you finish, you hand the cake back to him. You keep to his side for a while, talking about whatever drifts into your mind. The two of you actually laugh, which makes you feel a thousand times better about where you stand with him. Although you have conflicting feelings about Atsumu, no matter what happens he's always able to make you feel better.
As time flies by, you begin to get tired. However, you decide to stick it out, never wanting this moment to end. Unfortunately, your desires are literally rained upon when thunder booms and a downpour starts.
"Why do we always get the shitty luck?" Atsumu smiles as he stands up and brings the two empty plates to the table under his covered porch. But as you stand up to go inside with him, he takes you by the hand and drags you right back out again.
"What are you doing?" you laugh as he places one of his hands on your lower back, a gesture that spreads goosebumps up your spine. "We're going to get sick if we stay out here."
"So?" he grins as he spins you around in the rain. "Then we can just spend the day inside tomorrow. It'll be worth it."
"Not if I don't get that money in time," you scoff as you place one of your hands on his chest with the intent to pull away. However, as your eyes catch on his, something inside you tells you not to ruin this moment.
The way Atsumu looks at you back makes you think as though there's something he's dying to say. But instead of doing so, he takes his hands off of you and steps back. "You're right, I'm sorry," he shakes his head.
"No, it's fine. I was just overreacting," you attempt to convince him. However, he's already walking back toward the house. "Atsumu, wait! Come back!" you call out to him in the dark.
Despite your calling, Atsumu simply picks up the two empty plates and walks back inside without another word. Something is really going on with him, but you can't say for sure what it is. To be completely honest, you wish he'd just say whatever it is and get it over with, but if it's what you think it is, you aren't sure what'll happen when he does.
You suppose for now, the two of you are going to pretend as though nothing has changed in the past two weeks. As if you're simply staying there for your own protection. As though you're still waiting for Osamu to come back...
