chapter fifteen: bee balm

On your ride back home, Atsumu drives past a nearby park. Your eye is caught onto a brightly colored ice cream truck. Ice cream would be great right now, you think to yourself, and apparently, Atsumu can read your mind considering how he pulls the car to the side of the road and puts the car in park.

"Wanna get something?" he asks as he nods to the truck in the center of the park.

"Really?" you ask. "I don't want you to just go out of your way for me, though. Do you want anything?"

"I always have room for dessert," he smiles cheesily.

"Okay, let's go then," you chuckle.

The two of you unbuckle your seatbelts and walk through the park. Atsumu tells you about his time at the roulette wheel with Tanaka and how they both took turns manning and betting until you came. He promises he didn't lose that much money though. However, you aren't sure what 'that' much money means for someone who makes half a billion yen per day after splitting his earnings with his brother.

When you arrive at the truck, you order for yourself. As you reach into your pocket for some money, Atsumu hands the employee some cash before you get the chance. In exchange, he receives the ice cream and hands yours over to you with another big grin.

"You don't always need to pay for me, you know," you remind him as the two of you walk off with your desserts. "What's a few yen in comparison to ten billion."

"Every last piece of paper counts when Akashi starts counting what you have to give him. Besides, I don't mind. It was my idea to park the car and make this excursion anyway," he replies.

"Do you always have an answer to everything?" you chuckle.

"I'd like to think so," he shrugs. "Better than staring at you with a blank look on my face."

"Oh, no, if you stare at me I'll just feel even worse for you paying all the time," you smile.

"I suppose for you maybe it wouldn't be a good thing, but on the other hand, I'd get some kind of an excuse to look at you," he chuckles. "That'd be a positive for me. You've got the prettiest face."

As you hear his words fall from his lips, you bury your face in your ice cream lest Atsumu will see the flustered expression on your face. Why does he always say and do such things? If you didn't know any better, you'd think he actually is trying to flirt with you.

The two of you find a bench to sit on and enjoy your ice cream. The two of you quietly eat in a silence you aren't sure if awkward or comforting. Not long after, you walk back to Atsumu's car.

As you place your hand on the handle of his car, he reaches for his keys to unlock it. However, before he does, he pauses and looks up at you.

"By the way, Y/N, I'm sorry about before... if what I said made you uncomfortable at all. Just being with you makes me so happy, I'd follow you anywhere. So, uh, thanks for dealing with me," he attempts to smile through his nerves. God, why does this man make your heart skip a beat every time he opens his big mouth?

Unsure of what to say, you smile as you think about it for a second. "You don't make me uncomfortable at all. I just wasn't expecting you to say something like that is all."

Atsumu nods and unlocks the car. The two of you step inside and he starts up the car. "What do you want for dinner tonight? I'll order in for us, that way we don't need to make anything."

"Does sushi sound good?" you ask him.

"You're the one who gets to pick, so you tell me," he says as he puts the car in drive.

"Let's do sushi then. Want me to order it?"

"Yeah. Here, use my phone. I don't mind," he says as he drives off and reaches for the phone in his back pocket at the same time.

He hands you his phone and gives you the password, 1005, his birthday. When it's unlocked, the first thing you see is a list of messages he had with Osamu. He must have been looking at them the last time he went on his phone. Just as you're about to swipe out of the conversation without prying into the private conversation, your eyes catch on your name written by Osamu.

ATSUMU: are you ever gonna ask her?

OSAMU: I don't know. I love Y/N with all my heart but it's a big step.

ATSUMU: so then, you're not going to ask?

OSAMU: no, i don't think so. at least not now. what does it matter to you?

ATSUMU: just curious, that's all. enjoy your date night.

OSAMU: yeah, you too.

That's the moment your heart absolutely breaks. So that's why Osamu never proposed to you. He wasn't planning on getting married while you were on the opposite side of that coin.

"If you order on DoorDash, my login should already be there. Did you find it?"

"Oh, uh, yeah," you whisper as you swipe out of the conversation and open google. "Found it."

As you scroll mindlessly through different types of sushi, your stomach twists into one huge knot. The mixture of the car ride, the sensation in the pit of your stomach, and scrolling through his phone makes you want to throw up but you choke it down before Atsumu gets suspicious.

Eventually, you order the food and put down his phone. You then close your eyes and try to blank out your mind. Unfortunately, it doesn't really work. You loved him so much. You wanted to spend the rest of your life with him. You wanted him to be by your side for all of eternity. What if it was you who disappeared? Would he even care? Would he go to all of this trouble like you are doing? Was he just messing with your head this whole time?

"Finally," Atsumu sighs. "We're home."
