chapter nineteen: dark crimson rose

Another week has gone by and you have a mere eight days before Kuroko's syndicate comes to collect what they're owed- the bodies of you and your subordinates. Additionally, there has been no more information on Osamu's case. Kita explains that he's most likely gone by now. With his trusted word as the final verdict, along with yours and Atsumu's agreements, you decide to hold a funeral for Osamu.

The whole time you stick close to Atsumu. You hardly even talk to anybody else besides him, minus during arrival for polite formalities. Once the whole thing is over and most of the crowd has gone, Kita and Aoi approach you both.

"The two of you are welcome to come back with us for awhile. It might be better to spend the day with friends than to do it alone," he offers.

The two of you look at each other, knowing he's completely right. "Thanks, Kita. That'd be really great," you nod.

"Actually, would you mind heading to my place?" Atsumu asks. "I'd love the company."

"Fine by me," Aoi smiles.

"Alright," Kita agrees. "I'll drive."

Back at Atsumu's place, you spend most of your day hanging out with Aoi. She had taken the time to go through Atsumu's things to find something interesting for the two of you to do. When she finds an unopened puzzle, she asks you to help her out. Thinking it'd be a great way to distract yourself from the morning, you agree.

As for Atsumu and Kita, the two of them grab a few drinks and walk outside to sit on the porch. While you work on the puzzle, you glance over and see Atsumu with an axe in his hand doing god only knows what.

"I see you and Atsumu have gotten pretty close lately. Do you enjoy staying in his house?" she asks politely.

"Yeah, we have but it's nothing like that. We haven't done anything if that's what you're trying to ask. It's just nice to have the company, you know?" you shrug as you pick up another puzzle piece in an attempt to move past the awkward conversation.

"So the two of you are just friends then? That's it?" she continues to inquire.

"Yep, that's it. Really, it's nothing," you attempt to assure her.

"Okay, I won't ask about it anymore, but if it's not nothing then you should at least be honest with yourself, Y/N. It's okay to have feelings for him. It's normal."

"It's not normal," you finally give in as you play with the piece of cardboard in your hand. "Osamu isn't gone, well, not definitely."

"Y/N, we just had a funeral for him, don't you remember?" she sighs as she talks softly.

"The whole thing was a blur," you admit. It all went by so fast and left your head spinning like one of those insane carnival rides.

"I understand how you must feel, but we did have the funeral for a reason. It's been just about three weeks now since he went missing. He most likely isn't coming back. You do know that, right?"

"Of course I do, Aoi, but why the hell would I want to admit that? I don't want him to be gone. I wish he was still here, he can't just fucking leave!" you burst out in tears as you stand up and make your way to the front door to catch some air.

Just as you reach the door, the bell rings. Thinking nothing of it, you open it nonetheless and come face to face with Oikawa on the other side. "Hey," he smiles just as you hear the back door close from behind you.

"Oh, hi. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to almost knock you over," you smile awkwardly at him.

"That's alright," he nods to reassure you.

"Oikawa," Atsumu then calls out from behind you. "Something I can help you with?"

"I know we only just saw each other this morning," he begins, "but I wanted to come along and make sure the two of you were alright. Y/N looked really out of it so I just came to check up on her."

"Thanks for the offer, but I promise she's doing just fine. I'm taking good care of her, I can assure you," Atsumu says as he approaches you.

"Well that's good to hear," Oikawa nods. "Y/N, if you're feeling up to it, would you care to join me for dinner this evening?"

"Oh," you reply a bit shocked by his offer. "Sure, I'd like that. As long as it's alright with the others that I go."

"Kita and I are fine with it," Aoi smiles at you.

Atsumu, however, has a different response. "You came just to check up on her now you're taking her out? You can't just show up and expect her to do whatever you say," he scoffs.

"Of course not," Oikawa smiles his award-winning grin, "that's why I asked. And to be perfectly clear I asked her, not you. You don't answer for her, do you?"

"No," you reply at the same time as Atsumu says "yes."

"What?" you say with knitted eyebrows as you glance over at him. "You're not in charge of me."

"That's why you're staying here, isn't it? I'm supposed to be watching out for you, Y/N. Please don't just run off with this asshole. I know him well enough to know what he's planning."

"He's from our syndicate, Atsumu. His only plans are to make me feel better otherwise he wouldn't have come all this way. We just held a funeral, for god's sake. You think he's got malicious intent after all of that?" you say to stand up for yourself.

"Knowing him..."

Before Atsumu can continue with whatever bullshit he's about to spout off, you turn away from him and grab your phone from the table nearby.

"Thanks for the offer, Oikawa," you smile. "I'd love to go and I'm ready whenever you are."

"Right this way then," he says, stepping aside to let you pass. You then walk out, your back turned to Atsumu which means you miss the look of murder he passes on to Oikawa as he closes the door behind you. But in this moment, you don't care. Perhaps a break from Atsumu would do you good.
