006. A RIP IN THE WALLPAPER
"MAYBE we're focusing on the wrong word," Scott suggested as he, Stiles and Lydia were sat around a table in the library, "Maybe instead of trying to figure out what 'Aspen' means, we should be focusing on Bellator, because at least then, we have a lead, you know?""You think we should talk to Ace?" said Stiles.
"Yeah," Scott replied, "I mean—if this person is our age, and she was our friend— she might be supernatural, so she might've been related to him, right? It's a clue."
"What if Aspen's her name?" Lydia spoke up in suggestion, "It's quite rare, but it is a girl's name."
"Aspen..." Stiles murmured, feeling a familiarity as the name left his lips.
A few moments later, Malia was approaching their table, having just finished her make up exam with Mrs Martin. She'd overheard their conversation on her walk over, and then sat down beside Scott with a less-convinced face.
"You guys are talking like we know she's a real person," said the werecoyote— "I hate to play the pessimist in the room, but this is all just speculation..."
"We know," Scott said with a small sigh, "but have to at least look into this, there are so many holes in my memory that don't make any sense."
"Like what?" Lydia asked, hanging in the balance between Malia's skepticism and Scott and Stiles' firm believing.
"Like— remember when we were in Mexico, and Peter and Kate turned me into a berserker— how the hell did I turn back to human?" Scott said to the three of them, "I remember attacking all of you one minute, and the next I was fighting Peter as myself. Something had to have happened to trigger it."
"Or someone..." Stiles murmured, giving Scott a knowing look.
"Right," said Scott, and then continued, "And— the night of the Eichen House lockdown—why were we even there? Lydia, you escaped the night before that, so why did we go back?"
"To get Ace out?" said Malia.
"He'd been in there for nearly a year," Scott replied, "Why wouldn't we have tried sooner? And— and why was he even there?"
The whole group fell quiet, none of them being able to come up with an answer. Malia and Lydia were more skeptical of the existence of this Aspen character, while Scott and Stiles were more than convinced she had to have existed.
"Okay— change in conversation," Lydia spoke up in a more light-hearted voice, "Malia— how did your test go?"
"It was alright," the Werecoyote replied, "Isaac helped me study for it last night."
The other three gave her a knowing, slightly teasing look—remembering last night when she and the Lahey boy had pulled up together in her car, especially considering Isaac's flintiness when first introducing himself.
