025. YOU HAVE GOT TO
BE DELUSIONAL
ASPEN THOUGHT SHE WAS DREAMING. There was no way this was real, there was no way she was really stood at her college dorm door, looking into those haunting eyes on the other side of it. No way."You've got some nerve..." she finally spoke, keeping a safe distance away from the door, while her roommate, Jo, was in the bathroom.
"Aspen, please—"
"No, River, you don't get to ask me anything." Aspen snapped, raising her voice more, infuriated by his audacity to come to her. "You're lucky all I did was send your sister to prison, I let you go."
The eighteen year old boy was dressed in his usual decorum—black ripped jeans and a grey t-shirt. His grey eyes were as chilling and as piercing as ever.
"Not without shooting me in the leg first..." River murmured, keeping his voice down.
"Be grateful I didn't go for the head." she shot back, putting up a strong exterior despite the fearful rapid beat of her heart. "How did you even know where to find me?"
"Well I knew you would've graduated by now, and you always talked about wanting to get into Harvard, y'know, when we were—"
"Living out a precariously orchestrated lie?" Aspen cut him off, glaring and getting ready to slam the door in his face.
"It wasn't all a lie—" River tried to defend himself.
"Save it," Aspen scoffed, "You have five seconds before I slam the door in your face and file a restraining order."
"Okay, okay—" River said, shooting his hands up in surrendering defence, "Something happened to me, and— and I need help. I know you don't owe me anything, but I was hoping—"
"No." Aspen didn't let him finish, shaking her head as she reached out for the door to slam it shut. "I don't care what possibly could've happened to you—my answer is no, now get out."
"Wait, wait— !" River held out his hand to the door, stopping her. "Aspen, please—"
Suddenly the door to the bathroom was opening and a very tipsy Josephine was stumbling back into the living area, noticing River was still in the doorway.
"Ooh—hottie's still here?!" Jo chuckled drunkly, "Asp, invite him in! If not for you, then for me— please?"
"Sorry, Jo." Aspen apologised, "He was just leaving."
River looked into Aspen's eyes with pure desperation, a look she never got the chance to see on him before. As much as she never wanted to help the boy who not only traumatised her and gave her trust issues for life—but also tried to make her choose between her two best friends, which one lived and which one would die— she was still curious. Curious as to what the hell could've happened to make him think he could possibly turn to her of all people.
