The phone rings and I run to it. I clear my throat before answering and slowly pick up the phone.
"Hello?" I call out.
"Hello, is this Y/N L/N?" a woman's voice answers on the other end.
"Yes, this is she," I respond.
"Okay, great! This is Linda from Bookmark Newspaper. I'm a friend of Karen Wheeler," she says.
"Ah, yes! Hello Linda," I beam.
"Hello! I was calling to let you know that I'd love to have you as a writer here at Bookmark Newspaper," she utters.
"Oh, fantastic!" I cheer.
"Before you say yes to the job, Karen has informed me she hasn't told you about the pay or anything like that, so if it's okay, I'd like to go over that with you," she says.
"Oh, yes. That's fine," I respond.
"Great. This job will pay twenty dollars an hour. You will have your own desk here and a typewriter. Every week, writers in the office will come to a meeting and propose their ideas for the weekly paper. The idea that will catch the public's eye will be the head of the weekly paper, along with other topics that other people suggest. Does that sound okay?" she explains.
"Yes, that sounds great," I answer.
"Good. Now, I'm sure you saw when you walked in that most men are in the office, right?" she questions.
"Yes, I did notice that," I nervously laugh into the transmitter.
"Well, that's because the men that work here are hard on the women. They think they aren't good enough for this job. I gave up on hiring women for a while, but then you came in. You remind me a lot of myself, and I just wanted to warn you about them," she sighs.
"Well, thank you for warning me, but that's not going to stop me from taking this job, ma'am, respectfully," I say.
"That's why I hired you. You start this upcoming Monday. I'll be in the office that day, so I look forward to seeing you," she chuckles.
"I look forward to seeing you, as well. Goodbye!" I say.
"Goodbye," she responds.
I hang the phone back on the wall and can't help but doing a cheerful scream. I run to my room and take a sticky note and a pen.
California, here I come!
___
It has been about two weeks since I have been working at my job, and I've gotten a few nasty looks from men. Linda was very kind, and we've gotten along well. She even took me out to lunch a couple of times.
A man "accidentally" spilled his water all over my paper yesterday, but Linda came to my defense and made him apologize and clean up the mess.
My phone begins to ring, and I pick it up.
"Hello?"
"Hi, Y/N! I was wondering if you wanted to go to the pool today?" Max asks.
"Sure, Max. When do you want to go?" I question.
"In an hour?" she suggests.
"Sounds like a date," I chuckle.
"Great, see you then," she laughs.
I hang up the phone and get ready for the pool. I bought a new bathing suit and decided that today is a good day to wear it.
