ELEVEN | LIFEGUARDING

June 1985

At exactly 12 o'clock, Billy walks out of the locker room and out to the community pool. All heads turn towards him immediately. He knows he hot. He's used to it, but it doesn't faze him anymore.

He blows his whistle and everyone stops.

"Hey!" He yells out. "Lard ass! No running on my watch. If I catch you again, you're banned for life. Do you want to be banned for life?" The kid shakes his head profusely. "Good. Don't do it again." He blows his whistle and everything continues.

Billy walks past the row of middle aged women on beach chairs.

"Afternoon ladies." Billy greets.

"Afternoon Billy." They say in unison. Billy climbs the steps and sits down in his lifeguard chair. As soon as he looks out at the crowd, he feels a sense of power and entitlement.

They all know that he has the power to completely ruin someone's summer by banning them from the pool. What he says, goes and there's nothing anyone can do about it.

After about an hour, Billy looks around and sees a woman reading a book, laid out on one of the beach chairs in a very sexy leopard bathing suit. Billy clears his throat and goes over to her.

"Excuse me Miss?" She doesn't respond. "Miss." He says again.

"Yes?"

"That's a pretty big book you're reading there. What's it called?"

"Lord of the Rings. It's actually pretty good."

"Um I was wondering if I could get you anything. Some water? A snack from the vending machine?"

"You know what I would like? An answer."

"To what?"

"Why? I would like the question 'Why' answered."

"I'm not sure I know what you mean." She puts her book down.

"My boyfriend got a job and now it's like he's forgotten all about me. And I would like to know why."

"I have not!" Billy says defensively. She raises an eyebrow. "I—I mean. Your boyfriend sounds like an asshole." She shrugs.

"He can be. Sometimes..." She gets off the chair and stands. "You wouldn't do that to me would you Mr. Lifeguard?"
