So what happened to Ethan? Well, it was during the first lockdown.
A few months before, a friend of his, an immortal named Henry, had moved to Paris. He was a very nice guy, fun and interesting. He blended in very easily with our group. We all liked him.
So when Ethan suggested that everybody - except Aidan, Amaury, and I, of course - could live in Elise's mansion during the lockdown, Henry was part of the group. Ethan wanted to protect the humans, and everyone thought that it could be less difficult to face all this together. And also, Valentina had her newborn baby. So, well, this seemed a good idea at the time.
And for a while it was. Ahmed referred to this arrangement as "The summer camp for lonely immortals and humans".
But the thing is, Henry had an episode. We didn't see it coming. He was not even 800 years old. It's too early to go through this phase and to become an Elder. So I don't know if it was that violent because it was premature or something else. But it was.
I was not there when it happened, but they told me that, one night, he woke up very confused. He didn't know who he was or where he was. He woke up everyone and he was menacing. Ethan tried to take care of him to protect the humans.
But he was not an Elder. He didn't have the psychic ability that could have helped him in this situation. At some point, Henry took one of the swords on display in the mansion and... Ethan had nothing to defend himself with. Immortals are hard to kill, but there are some things that even they cannot survive. Ethan died that night, trying to help someone and protect others.
Then Henry realized what he had done, that it was Ethan, and he ran away in shock. Nobody has seen him since.
It's Yon who called us. She couldn't explain the situation. She was crying. We came as soon as we could, but it was too late, there was nothing we could do. And that was it. He was gone. The absurdity of the world shone very brightly once again.
And you know what I thought? Well, at least Elise was not there to see that. Yeah... Seems ironic now.
At first, I hated Henry of course but it was not his fault. He didn't know what he was doing. If Elise had been there, it would have been a different story. She's going to think that, I know it. When she'll wake up tomorrow, what are we going to tell her?
