"What happens now?" George quietly asked, kicking the small pebbles on the path out of the way. Dream let the question drift in the air for a while. What does happen now? What should happen now?
Dream let out a sigh, audible for him alone to hear as he looked ahead. "I don't know, George," he said under his breath, only to receive nothing but silence in return, figuring that the brunette didn't know what to say, and honestly, he definitely didn't blame him.
The sun had went down hours ago, but both boys decided to stay up this time and continue their journey instead of sleeping when they barely needed it. They had everything they needed for the adventure which was enough to last them for atleast another four days.
George warily glanced up at the sky. They were still stuck in the crack of the earth with no direct way out. The moonlight shone against his smooth, porcelain skin, highlighting his barely visible, faded freckles. The brunette then looked at the other, whose hands were pocketed in the comfort of his pants, and gulped in thought.
While walking, the knight reached for the blonde's satchel that still hung from his waistband, gripping at it tightly in anticipation as he furrowed his eyebrows, contemplating something in his mind.
As Dream continued walking aimlessly with the knight, too distracted with what was going on in his head, he unexpectedly felt a small tug at the hem of his hoodie. The blonde glanced down, then over at George in confusion. He watched as George flashed him an embarrassed expression, retracting his hand to scratch the back of his head nervously.
"Um--," the brunette started, momentarily tearing his gaze away as he rustled throughout the small pouch. The blonde, of course, had known that the hunter was using his belongings, which they both knew were important to Dream, as some type of leverage. So, the sea green eyed boy was most definitely taken aback when George reached a hand back out to him. In his palm, perfectly sat his dagger which had grown dull over the days.
"What?" The masked man muttered out confusingly after a few moments of just staring at it, his pace slowing down as he couldn't break his gaze from the weapon. "Take it," George urged, and Dream was finally able to bring his gaze forcefully back up to meet big, brown ones. "Why?" He questioned, his voice laced with both suspicion and surprise. "What? Do you not want it?" George asked, slowly growing conflicted as well. Was he not supposed to give it back?
"No, no-- that's not it," the blonde breathed out. Their encounter was slow, but it was comforting in a way. "Okay, then why won't you take it?" George questioned, jerking his hand up a bit as he signaled for the other to claim his item back which was taken by mere force. "Just.." The sea green eyed trailed off. "Why?" The brunette furrowed his eyebrows, growing more and more conflicted by the taller's words the longer their conversation progressed.
"What do you mean 'why'?" George asked. "Why would you wanna give it back?" The blonde clarified, only causing the brunette to shrug, his doe eyes trailing down to the knife on his palm. "It's yours, isn't it?" It was silent for a moment, before Dream responded with, "Yeah, it is. But you do realize that.. that I could hurt you, right? Just like before."
George shrugged again, diverting his eyes back up once more as a soft smile plastered his face, though a sad tinge blossomed behind his brown pupils. "I know, and you could," George started, causing the blonde's eyebrows to knit together. "But, after what we've spoken about, I think we both know that you won't, at minimum. I think telling someone something like that is a huge leap of faith, no?" George hummed at his own statement, almost as if he were informing himself rather than the blonde. "For me, atleast," he decided to end with, waiting for some type of reaction that would emit from the masked man.
Dream gulped as he processed the other's words. He didn't want to admit it, not ever, but George was right-- right about everything. The more time they spent together and the more days that past, an oddly strange sense of trust grew within the boys who found a concerning sensation of euphoria between eachother.
