Adalynn Hummel sat outside on the bleachers, the warm early-September breeze gently blowing her brunette locks. All was peaceful, except for the yelling of Sue Sylvester as she trained her Cheerios.
One cheerleader in particular caught her eye. Quinn Fabray. The head Cheerio, HBIC, queen bee, and most popular girl at William McKinley High School. She's the very definition of the girls Adalynn can't stand, but – for some reason – she finds herself longing to want to know her better.
"There you are," said the brunette's life-long friend, Tina Cohen-Chang. "I've been looking for you everywhere. Should've known you'd just be here, though."
"I needed some air," said Adalynn. "I also needed a quiet place to think, but the Cheerios just happened to be out here, too."
"Ada, come on." The goth smiled knowingly at her. "We both know you only come here to watch these practices."
"Maybe I do," the brunette shrugged.
"You definitely do. Anyway, did you hear the news?"
"You talked to Ursula the Sea Witch to get a confidence potion so you'll stop faking a stutter in front of everyone except me?" Adalynn teased. "T, I'm so proud of you!"
"No, it's not that," Tina chuckled. "The Glee-"
"Did you hear?" asked an excited, out of breath Kurt as he ran up to his little sister. "Glee Club is starting up again!"
"I-I was just a-about to tell her, K-Kurt," the goth stuttered.
"Better luck next time, Tina, I did it first. So, will you guys join? It could be so much fun."
The two friends exchanged a look.
"Do you want to?" Adalynn asked.
"I'll only join if you join with me," Tina whispered.
"Deal."

After lunch, Adalynn walked up to the sign-up sheet for Glee Club. She examined the short list of people that had signed up – including Kurt and Tina.
"Are you auditioning too?" asked a girl with frizzy blonde hair and bright blue eyes.
"Yeah," Adalynn replied as she signed her name on the sign-up sheet. "Are you?"
"I was thinking about it," said the blonde. "I'm Bailey, by the way."
"Adalynn. I'll see you in Glee Club." She handed the pen to the taller girl and gave her a small smile before heading down the hall to her next class.

One nerve-wracking audition later and Adalynn was in the choir room rehearsing the Glee Club's very first number, Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat, with a bunch of misfits just like her. Including – but not limited to – Kurt, Tina, Bailey, a boy in a wheelchair, a mini Aretha, and the annoying Jewish girl every knew for all the wrong reasons.
Everyone did jazz hands as the number ended and the wheelchair boy – Artie – crashed into the wall.
"We suck," said the annoying Jewish girl – Rachel – as they finished the number. "Mr. Schuester, do you have any idea how ridiculous it is to give the lead solo in Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat to a boy in a wheelchair?"
"I think Mr. Schue's using irony to enhance the performance," said Artie.
"Besides, who cares if he's in a wheelchair?" asked Adalynn, crossing her arms and raising a brow at the older brunette.
