⎯THE FIRE BETRAYAL
CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
♤♢♧
Alaenys had remained in her room, waiting for Aemond to return with news. But when he did, he didn't look pleased. "Well?" Alaenys asked. "My love—" Aemond started slowly walking towards to his wife. "No, don't say it like that" Alaenys said hearing the sadness in his voice. "They locked your mother up in the Black Cells, and she died during a stillbirth" Aemond said, and Alaenys let her tears fall, tears she didn't know she still had.
She placed one hand on her chest, above her heart, and another over her stomach as she doubled over crying. "No" she cried out, cutting through Aemond as he watched her react to the news. He walked towards her, holder her shoulders gently before pushing her flush against his chest. He didn't speak, letting her cry out. "Who ordered it, do you know?" she asked through her tears. "I do not" Aemond said, his own tears slipping through trying to hold it for Alaenys.
"I reached her, before she passed. I wish I could have done more" Aemond said. "You did all you could" Alaenys said. "Did she say something?" Alaenys asked, looking up at Aemond who was almost two heads taller than she was. "She told me to tell you, and Daemon, that she loved you, and to look after you and everyone" Aemond said and Alaenys smiled. "I'm glad you were there with her" Alaenys said.
"Is she still there?" she then asked, wondering if her mother was still left behind. "No, Princess Rhaenys escaped as well, she took your mother to Dragonstone" Aemond said. "My father will rage war if we don't reach him fast enough" Alaenys said. "What do you wish to do?" Aemond asked her.
Alaenys pulled away from Aemond, trying her tears, as she looked out her window. "Your mother informed me that Aegon will be crowned King tomorrow, in the Dragonpit." Alaenys said looking back at Aemond. "We shall go, see their actions, and when the time is right, I will take Naela to Dragonstone. I am my mother's heir, Which means with her and Viserys' deaths, I am to be Queen" Alaenys said.
Aemond lowered himself on one knee, looking up at Alaenys, unsheathing his swords, presenting it to her. "I pledge my life, my sword, and my love, to the rightful Queen, Queen Alaenys, first of her name, of the House Targaryen. Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lady of the Seven Kingdoms, and Protector of the Realm" Aemond said, looking at Alaenys. She smiled at him and pulled him back to his feet.
"I shall hold you to your pledge, my King" Alaenys said. "I am no King, I am nothing more than a consort" Aemond said, but Alaenys shook her head. "No, Aemond, you are my heart and my soul. The father of all my children, and the only person in this Castle I trust right now, I want us to rule, together, as equals" Alaenys said.
"It would be much better that way too, the Realm would never choose me as it's ruler, not unless I have a man by my side" Alaenys said. "But you—" Aemond started but Alaenys stopped him. "I know, but this way, even the Lords who have doubts can be better convinced" Alaenys said and Aemond nodded. "Anything for you" Aemond said and kissed her.
