Stereotypes

Dear Reader,

Firstly people can I just say that stereotypical thinking is ridiculous. At a young age I learned that stereotypes are way off. Well in most cases they are. I mean people that play into stereotypes really don't help their cases. Not my point here. In this installment of The Method To My Madness I'm going to edumacate some peoples.

The first stereotype I want, nay need to address is probably my favorite one. It's "All asians are outrageously intelligent." Now I'm not saying asian people are dumb I know some that are very smart. I'm just saying not all asians are smart. My best friend will be the first to admit that even though she is asian she is not a genius. First example as evidence to prove she is not a genius: When we were in 8th grade we had a sleepover at her place. The next morning we were making breakfast and she wanted eggs. So she pulls out a pan and puts some oil in it to help prevent the eggs from sticking. She heats up the oil but she isn't going to cook the eggs in the oil. She has to get rid of this excess oil. What does she do? She pours it into a cup she found sitting on the counter. Big deal? Yes because it was a STYROFOAM cup. Burning hot oil in a styrofoam cup causes styrofoam to melt. I know this, people with common sense know this, she did not know this. The styrofoam is still stuck on her counter top. My next example? She put aluminum in her microwave last year because she was bored. She just doesn't make smart decisions.

Another one of my favorite stereotypes is that men are the more dominant members in a relationship. That is just ridiculous. There are plenty of stay at home dads. Also guys don't always take charge. I mean my last relationship was with a guy that barely ever started a conversation with out me guiding him through it. Honestly in many ways I took the traditional guy role and he was the girly one. Right down to the pmsing. Again not my point in why this stereotype is wrong. There is nothing wrong with a woman taking charge and it shouldn't always be the guy anyways.

Have you ever heard the stereotype that says if you live in America and you are from the south you are most likely a white trash redneck and a slice of bread has a higher IQ than you? Now this one tends to get me a little riled up. I'm from the south. I am not a redneck and I took advanced placement classes all throughout school. I always got A's and B's. So I do in fact have an IQ much higher than an entire loaf of bread. Also not all rednecks are unintelligible and certainly not married to their cousins. I just thought I would point that out.

Lastly, being young must mean you're naive. Right? WRONG! While some people that are young may be naive that does not mean all youth is. Youth today know more than adults now did when they were our ages. I know several adults that will admit this. Maybe it's because kids today are exposed to more now then say our grandparents' generation was. This is because the world is evolving everyday. Kids do know what depression is. They know what love is. They know what sex is. It may be true that they shouldn't know what those things are because they are too young to experience it. That doesn't mean youth today doesn't know.

I just thought I would let this be out there for you to absorb.
