The bell rang, signaling the end of school on Friday afternoon. I stood up from my chair and reached down to grab my bag, hauling it over my shoulders.
I walked out to the parking lot, heading to my car, when I saw Wyatt at a distance talking on the phone. His face was scrunched up in anger and his stance was tense, his hand bunched into a fist. No one in the group seems to notice but me, so I headed over to where Wyatt was. When I got into listening distance, I could hear Wyatt angrily hissing into the phone.
"You have got to be joking!" He said, body shaking in anger. His eyes were squinted as they glared at the ground.
He was silent for a moment, listening to the other person talk before he responded.
"I told you countless times, it's not going to happen! I don't care what you say, what they say or anything! I'm through letting you control me!" I blinked at his last comment, Wyatt was never one to be controlled... Right?
I tried to think back to all the times I was around him but couldn't quite seem to pinpoint a time when he ever really followed people. He usually does his own thing, as far as I knew. I shook my head, trying to focus in on what he was saying.
"Look, I've listened to you for too long, and I'm done allowing you to live your life through me. This is something that I don't want and you need to learn to accept that." Wyatt glanced up from the ground, he squeezed his eyes shut for a few moments and reopened them. His hand stretched out before curling back into a fist while his other hand clutched at the phone tightly.
I didn't want to eavesdrop and intrude on his personal matter but I wondered if this was one of the things that got in between him and Eve and his friendship with everyone in the group. I told him that when he was ready to talk about it, I'd be here to listen but what if he feels like he has to go through all of this alone. Why couldn't he feel like he could ask Eve, his girlfriend, for help and support? Evelyn loves him, she would always be there for him when he needs it.
Wyatt bit his lip and looked down at the ground again. His face still showed anger but I could see traces of anxiety and nervousness.
"You will NOT get in the middle of this!" I stepped forward and Wyatt's eyes flew to me, widening. "I got to go, we're not done talking about this." Then he hung up, not giving the other person a chance to reply.
It was silent between us for a few seconds before Wyatt nervously rubbed the back of his neck.
"Hey Aab..." He chuckled. "So..." He cleared his throat, "how much did you hear?" I studied him, not speaking a word. He shuffled on his feet and couldn't seem to stay still.
"Enough," I said, eyes holding steady with his, which seemed unable to meet mine.
Wyatt looked down at his phone and frowned, I assumed the person was calling back, but made no sound.
"This is your issue Wyatt, I'm not going to force you to talk to me about it or explain it." I sighed, running my hand through my falling apart ponytail. "But I'll be here when you're ready, and so will everyone else... Especially Eve." I gave him a small smile before turning around and heading to my car. After a few steps, I heard him take a deep breath.
"Her name's Sierra," he exhaled and I turned to face him.
"Who?" I asked in confusion. Wyatt was looking at the ground, not saying anything and I shrugged my shoulders.
"Sierra Chambers... is a girl that I'm dating," Wyatt looked up from the ground. He opened his mouth to say more when he was interrupted.
"AAB!" Eve came running up to me, her heels clicking against the ground. She had a giant smile on her face as she stopped in front of me. "You will never guess what just happened?"
