Chapter 8
I walked into my Chemistry class on Tuesday and went up to Mr. Harriet.
“Hello, Mr. Harriet,” I said and smiled softly.
“Hey Aab! I hope you’re feeling better,” he said; he is the only teacher that suspects the abuse I get from my Dad, because unfortunately he met my Dad. “We’re doing a partner assignment but we have enough students, so you can work by yourself,” he hands me a small packet. “I have a feeling that you won’t need me to explain it to you. But if you do, then wait until I start class, I’ll tell them how to do it.” I nodded my head.
“Thank you,” I said and walked to my table and set my stuff down. I rummaged through my bag until I found my pencil and began looking over the paper. It was a really easy assignment; even a monkey could do it. The pencil was rushing across the paper as I did my work. I was barely even aware that the class has started and the teacher began giving instructions. When I was almost done with the assignment, I saw people moving around me in my peripheral vision. I had 4 questions left to answer when I heard the chair next to me move and someone sit down.
“Hey, do you think you could help me?” I turned my head and saw Jace sitting next to me holding out the assignment. When I looked around the room, I saw everyone staring at us. They must be staring because they know that I hate to work with other people and it’s a habit that I don’t want to give up.
“Jace I could help you if you want!” Amber said rushing over to us.
“No thanks, I didn’t ask for your help,” he replied without looking up at her.
“Or I could! She won’t be much help,” Brianna said pushing me out of the way.
“I don’t want you to help me, I asked Aab.” Jace crossed his arms and narrowed his eyes at Brianna.
“Aab won’t know anything. Trust me, she’s useless,” Kate tried to convince him; pushing me farther away. Almost every single girl came over and tried to convince him to work with them. I just sat there amused at the scene in front of me. But confused that he would ask for my help; he may be a ‘friend’ but I still don’t like working with people. And why would he deny these girls, who are much prettier than me, their aid.
“I asked Aab! Not any of you, now go away!” Jace nearly shouted at them. They hung their heads down in defeat and retreated back to their seats, glaring at me the whole time. “Now, where were we,” he said turning to me, already calm.
“I’m sorry?” I asked confused.
“Can you help me with this?” He repeated.
“What about the other girls? I’m sure they would love to help you,” I said. It was a non-spoken rule to not work with me. Before when I worked with others, who were willing to work with me, they would try and get into my pants. They just thought that I was an easy lay; after the 7th time, I just stopped working with others.
“They’re all looks and no books; if you know what I mean.” He said and rolled his eyes. “They don’t have any brains because they think that all they need are looks and I’m tired of having to deal with girls like that.” He just shrugged his shoulders, grabbed a pen and the assignment and then turned back to me. “Shall we?” I was hesitant at first; it’s been almost a few years since I’ve worked with anyone other than my friends.
“I don’t know, I don’t really like to work with other people,” I said biting my lip.
“You’re not exactly working with me, just helping me. Like a tutor would do,” he said taping the pen on the table.
