Chapter 3
The next day I woke up from another sweat dripping nightmare and looked at the time to realize I was running late and jumped in the shower. When I got out I wrapped the towel around myself and went into the walk-in-closet. I grab some baggy grey sweats, a white tank top, my brother’s black t-shirt, and some white flip flops. When I’m done throwing my clothes on, I put my hair in a sloppy bun and rush downstairs.
“Good morning sweetie. Here, I made you some French toast,” my Mom sets a plate on the table. I sit down and stuff it into my mouth.
“Sorry Mom, I’m just trying to finish before I have to leave, I’m kind of running late today.” I said while she gives me a look that means ‘slow down or you’ll choke.’ “Ok, well thanks that was good. Bye Mom Love you.” I walk out the door and climb inside my 1970 Thunderbird. I back out of the driveway and start towards the school. When I get there, I park and reach over to grab my iPod. I plugged in the headphones and turn it on, and then Before He Cheats by Carrie Underwood starts playing. I grab my purse and backpack then get out of the car. My friends wave to me as I walk up to them. Then I remembered my 8th period teacher told me to go to the office on Monday to help show a few of new students around. So I changed directions and started walking toward the office.
“Aab! Where are you going?” Evelyn shouted, I turned around and looked their way.
“I almost forgot I had something to do today in the office. I’ll see you guys later in class.” I replied and continued on my way to the office. When I get there, I see some kids talking to each other and I walk around them and went up to the secretary,” Hi, Mrs. Parker, I’m here to show some new kids around.” I smiled at her, she was a nice secretary, and everyone loved her.
“Oh, yes! There you are deary, you’re awfully late today. Is everything ok?” She looked at me worriedly.
“Yea I’m fine, just overslept a little,” I said.
Mrs. Parker smiled warmly at me,” Ok then, and these students are the ‘new kids’ as you like to call them.” She pointed toward the kids behind me. I looked around and among the three; there was one that stood out the most. I don’t know why but he seemed familiar.
“You’ve got to be kidding me, she’s our tour guide?” He said, his voice also seemed familiar, but I just can’t place where I heard or seen him.
Then the principal, Mr. Johnson, came out and saw me.” There you are! I was beginning to worry, well; it seems as if you guys have met. Well, all you have to do is show them around and to their classes, you’ll be excused from your classes until Lunch. Answer any questions they have and show them around thoroughly.” Then he looked at the new students,” If you guys have any questions, comments or complaints, then you can go to Ms. Birdhy, and you don’t have to go to your classes until after Lunch. Now enjoy yourself, have fun and Welcome to Warren High School, Home of the Wildcats. Good day,” then Mr. Johnson left.
“Umm,” I look at them and look away. ‘I feel really uncomfortable doing this. How did I end up in this position without Evelyn with me?’
“Hi! I’m Sterling Cooper, it’s nice to meet you, Ms. Birdhy,” he chuckles after he says my last name, everyone does.” So I guess you’re our tour guide. That’s cool,” he smiles at me and looks toward the other 2 kids of the group.” This is Jace Jackson, my best friend, and this is Myra Jackson, Jace’s sister.”
“Hello,” Myra held her hand out to shake mine. I just stared at it until she dropped it.” Ok, well like Sterling said, I’m Myra, call me Mie.” She sounded bored.” And don’t even try going for my brother, he won’t be interested, just giving you a heads up.”
