Harry looks at all the decorations for Halloween, beginning to wish he hadn't accepted the invitation to the Deathday Party "A promise is a promise, uou said you'd go to the deathday party." Hermione tells him. Sighing Harry nods "What's got your wand in a twist Sweetie?" Lily asks as she walks past. "I promised Nearly Headless Nick I'd go to his death day party." Harry tells her. "Oh, we'll you can't take it back now. If you want I can drag your father along and we can come too." Lily suggest. "Really?" Harry asks with a smile. "Of course, I'm guessing you three are already going too?" Lily asks Hermione, Ron and Draco. "Yeah, we told Harry we'd go with him." Draco nods. "Okay, well, I'll see you all later. We'll meet you in the entrance hall." Lily smiles, putting a hand on Harry's shoulder before walking off. "It won't be so bad with mum and dad there." Harry smiles.

At seven o'clock, Harry, Draco, Ron, and Hermione meet Lily and James in the entrance hall "There you four are. Don't worry, once the party is over I have a surprise for you all." James smiles. "Really?" the four of them ask. "Oh course." James nods. "Come on then." Lily smiles, leading them into the dungeons, down a passageway that has been lined with candles. As they get closer they all hear a noise that sounds like nails on a chalkboard "Is that supposed to be music?" Ron asks in a whisper. "I think so." Draco responds just a quiet. They turn the corner, finding Nearly Headless Nick standing at a doorway hung with black velvet drapes "My dear friends. Welcome, welcome... so pleased you could come..." he greets, bowing to them as he takes his hat off. Walking in they find hundreds of ghosts drifting on the crowded dance floor with a chandelier above them, burning black candles with a blue light. Their breath comes out in a mist from the room being so cold with all the ghosts "Shall we have a look around?" Harry suggests. "Careful not to walk through anyone." Ron says nervously.

The six of them walk round, Hermione suddenly stopping "Oh, no. Turn back, turn back, I don't want to talk to Moaning Myrtle." she tells them. "Who?" Harry asks as they backtrack. "She haunts one of the toilets in the girls bathroom on the first floor." Lily tells him. "She haunts a toilet?" Ron asks. "Yes. It's been out-of-order all year because she keeps having tantrums and flooding the place. I never went in there anyway if I could avoid it; it's awful trying to have a pee with her wailing at you." Hermione responds. "Look, food!" Ron pipes up, pointing to a long table draped in black velvet. They walk over but immediately stop when the smell of rotten and burnt food hits their noses, a ghost flying through the rotting salmon "Can you taste it if you walk though it?" Harry asks in interest. "Almost." the ghost responds sadly as he drifts away. "I expect they've let it rot to give it a stronger flavour." Hermione comments, looking at the food.

Peeves suddenly pops out from under the table, stopping in mid air in front of them "Hello Peeves." Harry greets cautiously. "Nibbles?" he asks sweetly, offering them a bowl of peanuts covered in fungus. "No thanks." Hermione responds with a tight smile. "How are you Peeves?" James asks. "Very good Mr Prongs, Sir." Peeves bows, the four preteens looking at Peeves in slight shock. "Heard you talking about poor Myrtle. Rude you was about poor Myrtle. OY! MYRTLE!" Peeves calls. .Oh, no, Peeves, don't tell her what I said, she'll be really upset. I didn't mean it, I don't mind her... er, hello, Myrtle." Hermione says as a squat ghost girl in old Hogwarts robes and round glasses floats over. "What?" Myrtle asks sulkily. "How are you, Myrtle? It's nice to see you out of the toilet." Hermione smiles. Myrtle sniffs "Miss Granger was just talking about you." Peeves tells her sneakily. "Peeves." James warns. "Just saying - saying - how nice you look tonight." Hermione says, glaring at Peeves. Myrtle eyes Hermione suspiciously "You're making fun of me." she says, silver tears appearing in her eyes. "No, honestly, didn't I just say how nice Myrtle's looking?" Hemione asks the boys, elbowing the boys in the ribs. "Oh, yeah?" Ron nods. "She did." Harry agrees as Draco nods. "Don't lie to me. D'you think I don't know what people call me behind my back? Fat Myrtle! Ugly Myrtle! Miserable, moaning, moping Myrtle!" Myrtle tells them, crying. "You've forgotten pimply." Peeves hisses in her ear. Moaning Myrtle burst into anguished sobs and flees the dungeon, Peeves shooting after her as he pelts her with moldy peanuts "Pimply! Pimply!" he shouts. "Oh, dear." Hermione says sadly. "I'll talk to Peeves later." James reassures them. "And I'll talk to Myrtle, I got along quite well with her while I was a school." Lily adds.

Nearly Headless Nick drifts over to join them "Enjoying yourselves?" he asks. "Oh, yes." they all lie. "Not a bad turnout. The Wailing Widow came all the way up from Kent. It's nearly time for my speech, I'd better go and warn the orchestra..." Nick trails off, as the orchestra stops at the sound of a hunting horn "Oh, here we go." Nick says bitterly. Through the dungeon wall burst a dozens ghost horses, ridden by a headless horseman. The assembly clap wildly, Harry and the others starting to do the same til they see the look on Nick's face "Nick! How are you? Head still hanging in there?" the leader asks as he gets off the horse and claps Nick on the shoulder. "Welcome, Patrick." Nick responds stiffly. "Live 'uns!" Sir Patrick exclaims, spotting Harry, his parents, Draco, Ron, and Hermione and giving a huge fake jump of astonishment so that his head falls off. The crowd all laugh "Very amusing." Nick says darkly. "Don't mind Nick! Still upset we won't let him join the Hunt! But I mean to say, look at the fellow." Patrick's head says from the floor. "I think, Nick's very frightening and-" Harry starts. "Ha! Bet he asked you to say that!" Patrick laughs.

Nick strides towards the podium, under the icy blue spotlight "If I could have everyone's attention, it's time for my speech! My late lamented lords, ladies, and gentlemen, it is my great sorrow..." Nick starts, nobody listening as Patrick and the other's start a game of head hockey in the middle of the floor. "Oi, listen here you lot. You're here to celebrate Sir Nicholas' deathday, I suggest you all start listening to him." Lily shouts, every ghost in the room freezing and turning to face Nick. "Thank You Mrs Potter." Nick smiles graciously, continuing his speech. After the speech Ron looks at the others "I can't stand much more of this." he mumbles, his teeth chattering with the cold. "Let's go." Harry agrees, everyone nodding and walking out. "Pudding might not be finished yet." Ron says hopefully. "Not so fast, come to our office. I got that surprise for you." James reminds them.

Nodding the four preteens follow James and Lily to their office, walking in to find Regulus, Sirius and Remus. Grinning the four of them hug the three adults "I think they might have missed us." Regulus chuckles, hugging the four of them back. "Just a bit." Harry grins. "Come on, we bought food with us so we can celebrate Halloween together." Remus smiles, motioning to the pile of food behind them. "Great!" Ron grins, immediately digging into the food.
