"please, do not provoke her when we finally see her."

marsha jacobs felt as though she gave herself the worst case of whiplash turning to look at her husband who remained with his gaze upon the road towards the hospital. dr reid had called to inform them he had found their daughter, as well as their son. there was no calming the mother who had little to no clue as to what state either of her children were in on their separate ways to meet at the hospital.

cal jacobs knew his daughter wrote that bible verse he had found in his office. her burning part of his construction site after the formal kind of proved it to him. one wrong move, and lydia could cause his entire fucking life to explode.

"we have no idea where she has been this entire time. we know it wasn't us, we know it wasn't the howard's, the bennett's." marsha rambled with a shaking head as if it could dismiss the truth she was reaching. "i found drugs in her room, alcohol everywhere. what if when we find her, she's actually a full blown addict. what if she's been staying with whoever she's been finding this stuff from? she set the construction site on fire. what are we going to do about this, cal? i mean, seriously?"

the longer it took cal to respond, the more marsha would speak.

"i guess using drugs would make what she did to you and nate make more sense. she wasn't thinking clearly, how long do you think she's being doing this?"

"i don't know," cal finally said as they reached the hospital parking lot. but i don't want to push her away again by confronting these issues here when we don't know what going on with our son either."

cal had a feeling he knew exactly how long lydia had been using drugs, who taught her how to find them, and he knew marsha wasn't dumb enough to be so clueless, but he decided to take the route the jacobs family had always taken.

sweep under the rug and keep moving.

nate jacobs was in love. he didn't know how it happened. he didn't know why it happened, but he could just feel it, and it felt so fucking good.

but it was complicated.

the boy beaten to a pulp stared off as if he was no longer present in reality while maddy's foot pressed the gas a little harder. cassie was holding nate's head in her lap with tears streaming her face reflected by streetlights they passed. everything cassie once knew about nate, the abuse, manipulation, everything was tossed out of the window during the drive. she caressed nate's face in the way she once caressed lydia's, which made her hand drop and her eyes peer back up towards maddy who had been watching through the rear view mirror.
