They sat in silence, the car parked in Stevie's driveway as the quiet, dark night sky surrounded them. Stevie ran her fingers over the back of his gently, their hands still loosely entwined over her left thigh. Neither one of them was quite sure what to say.
"Do you want to come in?" She finally asked softly.
"I probably shouldn't..."
"Oh, okay. Right."
"It's not that I don't want to, Stevie. It's just that if I come in there, I'm not going to want to leave. And I'm supposed to be out running a quick errand. And I just..."
"No, you're right. I get it. I wasn't thinking," she shook her head, trying to hide the tear forming in her eye. Her emotions were all over the place right now, this night surprising her at every turn.
"Hey," he whispered, his finger lifting her chin and turning her face to him, "He's an asshole. Are you okay?"
She nodded wordlessly, overcome by emotion.
"Come here, is this okay?" He asked before pulling her into his arms. She nodded again, silently letting her head fall against his chest as he held her tightly. A giant breath she didn't realize she'd been holding in escaped her, the feeling of safety from Lindsey's embrace calming her nerves.
"Thank you," she whispered again. "I should go."
"I'll walk you in," he nodded.
They walked arm-in-harm towards her front door, each step slower than the last in an effort to slow down time. Stevie knew she was just feeling sad and vulnerable after her surprisingly triggering and bad date tonight. Of course Lindsey felt comforting right now. It didn't mean anything though, she kept telling herself as their hands gripped onto each other tightly.
Lindsey stood behind her as she fiddled with the key, his body somehow moving even closer to hers right now - the realization he now had to leave her suddenly too much to bear. As she pushed the door open, he gently tugged her by the arm, pulling her back into him softly. She turned around in his embrace, facing him as their faces and bodies lingered inches apart. His forehead collapsed against hers while he nuzzled his nose down her face wistfully. They stood frozen, hands exploring and noses rubbing in the crisp night air.
"You have to know that I want nothing more than to come in there with you," he whispered against her.
"Sometimes what we want doesn't matter," she sighed, her breath tickling his face.
"You always matter," he kissed her cheek while her eyes closed.
Their lips continued in a silent standoff, circling each other with just centimeters of air and want separating them. Finally, she closed the space between them and hooked his bottom lip between both of hers, sucking gently as her hands found their way into his pockets. With a groan, he pulled her closer against him, deepening the kiss and wrapping his hands in her hair. He wanted to stand here on her front doorstep forever, two bodies hungrily pawing at each other before having to go back to their real lives. The hunger, the want, the need, it was all so electric and invigorating.
"I'm sorry," she sighed into his mouth, "I know you have to go," her breathy voice, he was sure, was created specifically to torture him in this lifetime.
She smirked as she felt his hands squeeze her waist tighter, secretly hoping her last words would elicit a physical reaction from him. Like always, they did.
"You're killing me," he groaned.
"Thank you for being my hero tonight," she sighed, breaking their kiss to pull back and look into his eyes, "Seriously, Linds. I needed you and you came. That means a lot to me."
