*Castle Shores*
When Benjamin informed me that he was coming home from Detroit on the phone, I was in the kitchen in our new house on Castle Shores. My sister-in-law liked to listen in, so I tried not to talk too much on the phone. Later that day, she would go back to her apartment in Downtown Detroit.
"Where do you want this?" He asked. He had always been at his best at mornings.
"That goes into Saoirse's room." I said.
I stood in the kitchen in my blue terry-cloth robe and bare feet. I poured his coffee from the coffee maker that I set up early that morning. Benjamin sipped at it as he looked at me.
"I just checked it this morning," He said, beaming. "Naka-deposit na yung two million dollars sa Chase Bank."
He put down his coffee. He walked through strode to living room.
"I know someone who can take care half of that money." I said.
"Who?" He asked calmly when he reached me.
He looked down at Saoirse and held her hand. I stepped closer without saying anything.
"The Lehmann Brothers," I said. He hid something on his back.
"I thought they filed for bankruptcy na way back 2008? That's the reason nga kung bakit nagka-financial crisis that time. Right?" He asked.
"Yeah? I think, may bago na ata silang name ngayon eh. Elliot Investments ata." I said.
He turned around to get his coffee. He sat on the couch, behind him the frames of his college diploma and achievements at very young age. "Isn't that risky? I don't think we trust our money to a company who just changed their name to cover up their mistakes."
"Hindi porque ikaw ang lalaki eh ikaw lang ang masusunod dito, Benj." I said.
"Oops, wala akong sinabing ako lang ang masusunod dito. Kaya nga sabi ko diba 'our money'?"
I was startled. Oo nga naman. May point siya.
"I'm sorry."
"That will not happen again,"
"Ever." He said."Good to hear that."
Benjamin turned to me.
"Hindi mo kasi nagegets eh," I said. "Buong buhay ko, lagi nalang si Kuya at si Mama ang nagdedecide sa para sa'kin...it may not make sense, but I want my voice to be heard naman — lalo ngayon na kasal na ako."
"Okay, okay. I will,"
"You will be." Benjamin said. I gave him a smile before he took his cup to the sink.I went back to the time when my father and I would talk to each other if we were just bestfriends. He would come up to my room at mornings to see my then-five-years-old self sitting near me, waiting for my eyes to flicker so I could say, "Bulaga, Daddy!"
